Adam Ant live @ CQAF Marquee, Belfast, 04/05/13
Been looking forward to catching 'Adam Ant' live again, ever since our last encounter at 'Vicar St' Dublin back in 2011.
That was an amazing night, I couldn't believe how good a show it was (complete with a vintage setlist to die for).
Unfortunately tonight didn't live up to my high expectations raised by that performance, but thats not to say it was a bad show, far from it.
The crowd was all ages, and even included a few young ladies dressed in full AA pantomime regalia, happily it wasn't another unannounced and unwelcome seated gig like last nights Dexy's show.
Plenty of local punky punters in attendance including Graham Marshall (Rudi), Barry Young ( Idiots), Dee Wilson (Original era Author), Guy Trelford (NI Punk site), Paddy O'Doors (Buck Eejit), Billy Riot (Hardcase), Kinky & Aidy (Defects), $tevie D (VX), Mully, Tony & Paul Magill, Youngsy & Liz (Sabrejets), Charlie & Des (Stage B) Greg ( Outcasts) and Wee Sam Haveron, which was good to see.
And again! just like the previous night there was no support act, this time it was left to a sound desk mash up of punk & rockabilly tunes to get the sell out crowd warmed up.
'Adam Ant & The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse', took to the poorly lit stage without any fuss and launched into the title track from their recently released hit and miss album 'Marrying The Gunners Daughter'. And from there it was a 29 song rollercoaster ride through his extensive back catalogue of post punk classics, pop punk hits & lets be honest, some 80s crap.
Six tracks from the aforementioned latest album were also performed, three of them were the songs I actually liked. With the vintage "antsalike" sounding 'Stay in the Game' a real highlight of the set for me.
Contrary to my fetish punk tastes, unsurprisingly it was the big hits that got the majority of the crowd going, and the hardcore punk fans heading for the bar.
The encores of 'Red Scab, the T Rex glam anthem 'Get It On', and a badly reworked rendition of 'Physical' which had totally undone the songs dark & sleazy edge closed a good but not great show.
It's 'The Specials' turn tonite!
