Alice Cooper (+ Def Leppard + Thin Lizzy) - Odyssey Arena, Belfast, 07/06/11
My main reason for being here tonight was to see the former 'Hollywood Vampire' and one of my chidhood heroes 'Alice Cooper' alive alive o! once again and I wasn't alone in the packed enermodome , there was various 'Alice' lookalikes, scream queens and refugees from 'the Murderdolls' fang club dotted all around the venue. I'd previously witnessed his hair metal 'Trash 'tour gig at the 'Kings Hall Belfast' back in 1989 which until this evening had been his one and only gig this side of the border. This was real oldschool twisted entertainment , every theatre trick in the book was employed , you couldn't take your eyes of 'Alice' the man's onstage presence and charisma is immense.
There was a new costume / look for every song , then there was the guillotine , electricity terminals , sparking gloves ,swords , walking canes , riding crop , dolls ,confetti, giant puppet etc etc etc etc etc.
As for his young band they were fantastic & drilled to perfection.
It was non stop thrills & spills from the moment the giant 'Alice' face adorned curtain dropped to the stage floor .
The set list was inspired , drawing heavily from his 70s heyday ,with a few latterday pulverising heavy duty tunes like 'Brutal Planet and Wicked young man' thrown in for good measure. The new tune 'Ill eat your face' was very tongue in cheek and as ott as you would expect of a song with a title like that. Check out the setlist below ,its pure class from start to finish.
During 'Wicked young man 'when 'Alice' donned his nazi cap and was swinging his riding crop around ,the pantomime villian turned very scarey ,sinister and unsettling as the man 'Vincent Furnier' made the full transformation into evil 'Alice Cooper' before our very eyes .
'Rob Zombie' may have cancelled his 'Belfast' and 'Dublin' gigs next day with an iffy and unexplained personal reasons excuse ( rumoured poor ticket sales might be a more accurate discription) , but his daddy 'Alice' showed him how to do it in style here tonight .
'Elected' brought the whole spectacular production to a glorious end and the audience gave 'Alice' & his band a well deserved and very noisey standing ovation , 'Alice Cooper' and his band were outstanding . Now that was a show!.
Show openers 'Thin Lizzy' were now a fading memory so I turned to $$ and said "Def Leppard' have had it and they would be better staying in their dressing room as they'll never be able to follow that performance" .............and I was right.
The too close for comfort gig at the '100 club London' on the 26.6.11 will be a cracker , wish I could be there .
The Halloween 'Night of fear 'tour with the 2011 sad excuse that goes by the name of the 'New York Dolls' as support kicks off on 25.10.11 and as usual Belfast isn't on the list .Oh well!.
