Bear Necessities fundraiser feat:
The Sabrejets, VX, Shame Academy, TB Chapman @ Warzone Centre, 04/01/13
People can and do say many things about the punk & rockabilly communities, but one things for sure, and to every participants credit "we look after our own and many others in times of need".
This gig was arranged after the original 'Home for a Bear' select soiree drew slightly less punters than the expected large gathering, thanks to typical N.I. circumstances beyond the control of the many who wanted to, but were unable to attend through no fault of their own. Tonight though was a whole different ball game, as the 'Warzone' was thankfully packed to the rafters.
We had 'Hilvis' in charge of the fun and games, while 'Terri Hooley' was doing his dj thang for the evening, and spinning a fine selection of vintage punk and retro tunes.
Opening tonights live proceedings was 'That Bastard (TB) Chapman' who prowled the stage playing his swampy semi acoustic bluesy garage punkabilly set, which included a great cover of The Stooges 'No Fun'.
Next it was the long awaited return (though for one night only) of the legendary '$hame Academy', I couldn't believe it had been three years since the bands last gig. But the boys managed to keep it together for most of their show (lol), even though they'd only had approximately 30 mins rehearsal time pre gig. You'll all know their set of 'Rudi, Outcasts classics, mixed with a great selection of covers off by heart now. And once again it was a re-introduced Stooges tune 'I wanna be you dog' that was another highlight for me amongst many performed tonight.
It was great to have '$A' back, but now it was time for the new snotty kids on the block with a point to prove 'VX' to show the oldies just what the clued up youth of today are made off. And this trio of teenage whippersnappers f****** ripped it up, having only reverted back to their original more aggressive three piece line up a week previous. The crowd loved them, with compliments from members of 'Rudi, SLF, The Outcasts, Stage B, Defects, Re'bel' and many others coming their way post performance. I told you 'VX' are the best young band in Belfast, didn't I? They proved it here that they can hold their own live against any band, past or present. Tonight they played possibly their best show to date.
"Don't look over your shoulder, but VX are coming".
Last but not least it was left to 'The Sabrejets' to close the show in fine pomade smeared rockin style. Being onstage is second nature to this cool combo, trust me these kats never disappoint. And they look just as authentic as they sound.
A few quid was raised and 'The Bear' will go to the ball , so expect the 'Big Man' to be putting in an appearance at the 2013 'Rockers Reunion'.
Have a great time Phil, from all your friends.
