Dexy's live @ CQAF Marquee, Belfast, 03/05/13
This was a weird one, not only was it an unadvertised seated show, but I don't think I've ever been part of a crowd of celtic soul brothers & sisters that was ahem! so senior.
$$ was mortified lol.
It was plain to see that most of tonights punters were not regular gig goers, they were looking for a Friday night drink and a nostalgia fix, sadly for them they weren't going to find it here tonight. They were certainly not up to speed on the current state of play in the Dexy's camp, thats for sure.
There wasn't a bobble hat, duffle bag or a donkey jacket to be seen on that stage, though Kevin's throwback baggy oversized dungarees were prominently diplayed throughout.
I'd done my research (sort of) and I knew what to expect, I'd been listening to the latest Dexy's album 'One Day I'm Going To Soar' on & off since its release, and I do really like it.
There was no support band, but a really cool pumping soul comp kept everyone entertained until the headliners took to the stage, which was in complete darkness at the time.
The show was equal parts soul review and an amateur theatre production, little vignettes were played out before, after and during the songs, as the new album was performed complete and in order.
Two thirds through and some of the now quite liquored crowd were getting restless because of the lack of hits being played, constant calls for 'Geno' & 'Jackie Wilson Said' were roundly ignored by the band.
'Geno' was finally given and airing midway through the encores, but not in its usual stomping style, more a calypso groove, which actually worked extremely well.
Along with 'She got a wiggle' & 'Incapable of love' Geno was my other favourite tune of the night.
The hits were thin on the ground, make that virtually non existant. and the show ended with American preppy era Dexy's standard 'Thats what she's like'.
I enjoyed this show, it was different, and there was absolutely nothing 'rock'n'roll' about it.
But Adam Ant will make up for that tomorrow night , when he takes us by the studded dog collar back to his pre pantomime pop "sleazy fetish punk" glory days.
