Headway Charity gig featuring: Henry Cluney, Sabrejets, Shake, Protex, SSSA, Shock Treatment 21 @ Kings Head, Belfast, 25/04/13
Jeez! I feel like crap, this is my second bout of the flu in the past two weeks, and I don't feel well at all. But as this is a very worthy cause, I decided at the last minute regardless of my germ filled/snatter tripping condition that I would drag both myself and $ out of the house and support this donation driven event.
By the time $pikey $teve (VX) and me arrived at the venue the show was already well underway, and I was pleased to see there was a good turnout. Having said that Shock Treatment 21's set had long since finished, and Stop Stop Start Again were getting into their final tune of the night as we took our seats.
SSSA were quickly followed on stage by Protex, who are Tokyo bound, and definitely a band gaining in confidence. They're getting better each time I see them live, and 'Strange Obsessions' was sounding particularly good here tonight.
Next up it was 'Shake' a band I'd never heard off, whose mix of borrowed Who / Led Zeppelin riffs, and sub Pat Benatar / Belinda Carlisle 80s yank soft rock styling did absolutely nothing for me.
What more can I say about 'The Sabrejets' that I haven't said before so many times, you tell me!. The kings of the greaser scene still reign supreme.
Finally it was down to 'Henry Cluney' to close the show, and I'm happy to report that he was in great form, cracking jokes and looking really well.
Five songs in and 'Davy Treatment' got back on stage with Henry to help fill the gap caused by a persistant tech problem with soon on stage guest '$teven Donnelly' from VX's borrowed guitar. Davy sang a folky sounding number which I didn't recognise, but the second song was a fun, mad, all over the place sing a long cover of 'The Boys' classic First Time, which also happens to be a personal favourite of mine.
Everything was now sorted, and $ joined Henry & his band for the last tune of their short six song vintage SLF set, which was the mighty 'Alternative Ulster'.
He took his position stage right, then spent the next three and a half minutes trading vocal lines and guitar riffs with Mr Cluney throughout a breakneck rendition of this bona fide NI punk anthem.
$teven totally went for it, the whole time maintaining his teen cool, and holding his own.

The most important thing about tonight was that ego's etc were left at the door, some much needed cash was raised, and everyone contributing enjoyed themselves in the process.
Well done to all concerned.
