Henry Cluney / Steven VX / Wasted Talent - live @ Coyles Bar, Bangor, 04/08/13
On Sunday night past, upstairs in Coyles Bar 'Henry Cluney' was enjoying a quiet birthday meal. Unbeknown to him a hush hush super secret party had already been organised by his good lady 'Anne' & BBA supremo 'TomTom' in his honour, and the guests were gathering downstairs while he was eating.
Steven VX & Wasted Talent were providing the punky soundtrack to the night, and it was hoped that 'Henry' would do a turn himself at some point during the evening, especially as a backing band featuring Petesy & Ave had already been sorted without him knowing.
Around 9.00pm a totally oblivious 'Henry' entered the room, only to be confronted by a saloon bar packed full of his friends & assorted well wishers, unsurprisingly he was a little shell shocked by the unexpected sight before him .
'Henry' did a tour of the bar, shaking hands and chatting with everyone, before taking his seat at the cake & presents adorned birthday table.
It was now down to 'Steven VX' to get this party started, with his pedal to the metal 100 mph set of punk & rockabilly covers, mixed with a couple of his original tunes.
'$VX' recieved a great reaction from the crowd, with one elderly punter, who had been singing away and clapping along to every song saying "you're a great performer & guitarist kid, but maybe you should slow it down to a blur" lol.
Before leaving the stage 'Steven' lead everyone in a mass acapella rendition of 'Happy Birthday', dedicated to Henry.
'Wasted Talent' were the perfect band for this party, I really enjoyed their rebellious jukebox selection of mostly 70's & 80's punk / new wave covers.
They opened their first set of two with a real curve ball by performing the Queens Of The Stone Age 'Rated-R' tune 'Monsters In The Parasol', and it was an excellent choice which really suited their style.
Great musicians,'Bob Moody' is a fantastic drummer. I'm glad to see the band are getting the attention they deserve at long last. They certainly had the crowd up & on their feet with their collection of fan favourites here tonight.
'Wasted Talent' then took a short breather between sets to allow an unrehearsed one off performance by 'Henry Cluney & Friends' to occur.
A 10 song set of 'SLF' standards had been compiled, without any input from Henry. But there was no pressure and nothing to prove here, Henry laughed and joked his way through. He was having a really good time, and so did all the guests assembled.
'Wasted Talent' took to the stage for their second set of five songs, which brought the celebration perfectly to an end. Happy Birthday Henry!, your party was great craic.
