Ice Age + Event Horses + VX - live
@ Limelight 2, Belfast, 21/11/2012
Jeez! this band stuff is hard work sometimes, that was one frantic day getting things organised in the 'VX' camp . We were running around like headless chickens right up to showtime trying to get everything sorted. This gig was really short notice as the band were only confirmed on the bill the previous evening , but in the end it was well worth the effort , cheers Dino.
'VX' took to the stage pretty early at approx 8.30pm. and to be honest 'The Limelight' was far from full, but the band just got down to business and gave it their usual full on cocky attitude and energy filled performance, and thankfully the punters who were there seemed to like what they were seeing and hearing.
'VX' were chuffed to be playing live at 'The Limelight', which is a venue where they've all been part of the crowd on so many occasions. Obviously they'd have liked it to be a sold out gig , but in reality it really didn't matter to them how big the audience was going to be, they were always going to enjoy their moment on that stage.
And If it was good enough for the 'Sex Pistols' to play in front of 10 punters early in their career, then its certainly good enough for 'VX' to play a support slot to a smaller than expected audience at this point in theirs.
Morale is sky high, and the next 'VX' gig will be 'Kicking up a Racket for Henry' fundraiser for Henry Cluney (ex SLF) which takes place this Saturday 1.12.12 in the Black Box, Belfast. 'VX' will be ripping it up onstage at 2.30 pm approx.
There was only a few more bodies in the room when 'Event Horses', who are a band from North coast / Ballycastle area, took to the stage, they were noisey and aggressive, just the way a modern day rock band should be.
Everyone enjoyed their set of self penned tunes and they reminded me a lot of 'Cancer Bats ' who are a band I like, so that was a plus point in my book. 'Event Horses' are a good local band , check them out!.
I'll be the first to admit that before 'VX' took an interest in this show I knew very little about the so called Danish punks 'IceAge', though some of the 'VX' members were already fans. Then by coincidence I read a less than engrossing interview with 'IceAge' in last Fridays 'Belfast Telegraph' and I checked out some of their video clips on youtube over the weekend, which didn't exactly fill me with high expectations.
For a name European headline act they drew a pretty disappointing crowd in Belfast tonight , okay it was a Wednesday night, but I've seen this place rammed mid week in the past. 'IceAge' seemed very self important and aloof , plus as far as I could see they made no effort to be friendly with the other acts on the bill. In fact 'Aidan' the 'VX' bass player said hello! to one of them earlier in the evening and got totally blanked for his trouble.
Onstage they were no different as they didn't even try to connect with their audience, and the singer 'Elias Bender Rønnenfelt' kept telling their fans to shuuush! between each song like they were primary school children. The first couple of numbers played were decent enough , even if it sounded like someone was playing them out of tune. But this "we think we're so cool and mysterious act" and the frontmans constant shuuushing was getting very boring very quickly, and was now starting to get seriously on my nerves.
After five songs I'd had enough and decided to call it a night , it was only out of respect to the promoter 'Dino' that I'd even stayed that long .
The memories I'll have of 'IceAge' live after this show, are extreme boredom and the guitarists tacky imitation 'Roy Rogers' style black and white fringed cowboy shirt.
Good Luck Dublin!
Hope you had a better time in the company of 'IceAge' than I did.
