Jimmy Eat World - live @ the Limelight, Belfast, 07/09/13
Jimmy Eat World are definitely no strangers to Belfast (or Ireland for that matter), and every previous time they’ve visited here I’ve managed to miss them for one reason or another. I was either too young to get into the St George’s Market/ Mandela Hall shows (where’s a fake ID when you need one?!), or they were supporting Eminem in Bangor during T-Vital 2011 and there was no chance of me going anywhere near that gig. So when their return to Belfast was announced earlier this year, I bagged my ticket as soon as I could - happy days! This was definitely going to be one of the gigs of 2013 for me, but was it worth the long wait? Let’s find out…
First up it was rising Dublin rock trio The Minutes. I saw these lads make their T-Vital debut supporting Foo Fighters last year, and to be blunt and to the point, I really didn’t dig them at all. However tonight, my opinion of them changed a little, more positive and a little less negative. Even though their old fashioned rock n’ roll/blues sound isn’t my preferred cup of metaphorical tea - they were enjoyable, they worked hard, keeping a nice groove going and the crowd seemed to like what they were hearing. The Minutes are a very tight outfit; all these high profile support slots must be knocking them into shape.
Tonight’s show started quite early, The Minutes were scheduled to be onstage at 7pm, with headliners Jimmy Eat World due on at 8pm. The running order was probably to accommodate the Limelight’s incredibly popular ‘AAA Saturday’ nightclub, which was advertised alongside the gig, with entry wristbands to the club offered at the door. I had a solo set to do myself round at the Black Box, and these times caused me a lot of un-necessary hassle, but in the end it all worked out for the better!
Arizona’s very own Jimmy Eat World walked onstage to an extremely noisy welcome from the very excited sold out crowd. They quickly got themselves sorted and opened with their new single “I Will Steal You Back”. It was plain to see from the beginning that there was going to be no messing around this evening.
Tonight’s lengthy 26 song set was jam packed with fan favourites and numerous other gems including the likes of “Pain”, “Goodbye Sky Harbor”, “Big Casino” and “A Praise Chorus”. The band romped through their set at an almost Ramones warp speed, only taking a breather when changing instruments or to have a quick chat with the crowd which to be honest wasn’t very often. The sweat was drippin’ off Jim [frontman], and the exhausted facial expressions on the rest of the band was more than enough to prove that Jimmy Eat World were giving it a full on 110% here tonight.
J.E.W (Yes, I know what it says) were on top form tonight!
There were many great tunes played here tonight, but there was two songs that really did it for me. They were the amazingly infectious singalong “Sweetness” and the powerful “Bleed American” (their two biggest singles) both played back to back just before the encores. The crowd went hyper, screaming the lyrics back and really getting into it. If the show ended on the last heavy chugs of “Bleed American”, it would’ve been perfectly spectacular. An outstanding show!
Jimmy Eat World, I salute you!
