Mohican Jack + The B Sides - live @ the Storehouse, Antrim, 16/08/13
Due to unfortunate circumstances headliners Shock Treatment had to pull outta this wee gig in sunny, downtown Antrim. With no time to call up a replacement the organisers decided, in true punk fashion, to carry on regardless. And I, for one, am glad they did as it turned out to be a crackin' wee gig.
It was good to see a decent turnout for the gig, the crowd made up mostly of familiar faces from the Antrim punk wars of yesteryear (as one would expect). The Storehouse is a small but excellent venue and well suited for this type of gig. It was a relaxed atmosphere, with a selection of classic punk tunes playing in the background, as we chatted to old mates, had a few drinks and generally chilled until it was time for the first band to come on.
I'd been wanting to see Mohican Jack for some time now but never made it to any of their gigs, so when I heard they were playing in my own backyard - well, I just couldn't miss this one. I'd watched (and been impressed) by the band's rehearsal videos on Youtube but they in no way prepared me for the sonic assault that is Mohican Jack live and in yer face! From the opening number 'Born A Loser' (which wouldn't be out of place on a Motorhead album) there was no let up as MJ thundered their way through a set full of self-penned hardcore tunes such as '2 Wrongs', 'One Way In', 'Mr 9 To 5', 'Wreckin Ball', and 'Fuck The Police' etc. This trio sure do produce a powerful sound, merging elements of Motorhead with the melodic hardcore of Down By Law and UK82 punk English Dogs style. Mohican Jack are a pretty tight unit, considering the band haven't been together that long, and drummer Pablo has only been with them a month? Well impressed by my first taste of MJ live and will make a point of seeing them again. Loud, proud and in yer face, Mohican Jack are a force to be reckoned with!
Time for a breather and a chance to catch up with Stevie and Danielle of Scarred For Life, Belfast's newest record label and gig promoter. Stevie is also, of course, the singer / guitarist with Mohican Jack. Great people and great to see them down in Antrim.
Local Antrim band The B Sides were left to entertain us for the rest of the night and they did so in fine style playing a lengthy set of classic punk tunes from our past - taking in everyone from the Sex Pistols to the Undertones to the Dead Kennedys, The Ruts, 999 and any other band you can think of. The B Sides proved to be an excellent covers band and good craic too. Highlight of their set was when Rab Pennie joined them onstage for a rousing version of the Sex Pistols classic 'Bodies'. Great stuff.
An excellent night all round. A big thanks to Paul Rutledge (Rut) for organising the event and to the bands for the cracking entertainment.
