Shock Treatment 21 - 'The Days Of The Buckshee Bounce Are Nearly Over' (CD album)
Debut album from Shock Treatment 21 recently released on the Spit! label. Popular north Belfast band Shock Treatment formed in 1978 and are best remembered for the song 'Belfast Telegraph' which appeared on the 'Room To Move' compilation EP released on Good Vibrations / Energy label in 1980. This was followed by the excellent 'Big Check Shirts' single released on their own DAB label. The band split in 1982 without releasing an album. Fast forward to 2012 - original member Davy Treatment puts together a new 21st century incarnation of the band featuring members of Peacefrog, Sample & Hold and Protex. This lineup went into the studio and recorded new versions of some old Shock Treatment classics as well as some new numbers. The result = 'The Days Of The Buckshee Bounce Are Nearly Over'.
The album opens in fine style with a reworked version of powerpop classic 'Big Check Shirts' now with added swirling keyboards. Track 2 'Future Plans' is another reworked ST oldie with the band sounding like a punkier Roxy Music. Next up is a reworked version of 'Great Expectations' - a truly wonderful song with a sound lying somewhere between Kate Bush and Sparks! Track 4 takes us off on a slightly different path with the slow, atmospheric 'Dancing On Your Grave', a song originally performed by another one of Davy T's old bands - Five Boys. This one reminds me of Fisher Z's 'The Worker'. This is followed by another reworked Five Boys song 'Out On The Street', an 80's style uptempo soul number. Excellent song and a sure-fire floor filler. Davy T does his best Bryan Ferry impersonation on the emotionally charged, heartfelt 'Beautiful Fool', the first of the new songs on the album. Track 7 'Ur Name and My Name (In A Heart)' is another new song about the early days of ST and it's as fine a slice of smouldering powerpop as you'll hear anywhere. More edgy powerpop on 'One Way Street', another reworked oldie which is then followed by the truly wonderful 'I'm Not Square'. The best track on the album, a real punky powerpoppin' gem. Do the wee fucken' dance! 'Troubled Mind' a slow burning song about mental health is up next and then we have the new version of 'Belfast Telegraph' to finish off with. This is a storming track with Stranglers style keyboards, military drumbeats, and Davy T's ranting vocals. Brilliant stuff. But that's not all as there is a wee bonus / hidden track tacked on at the end but not mentioned on the track listing. 'I Like It Like That' is pure 'in yer face' punk rock. The song was recorded by the original band all those years ago as the b-side to 'Belfast Telegraph' which was to be released as a single on the Good Vibrations label but sadly that never happened. It may have taken around 35 years but in the end they got there. All in all, an excellent debut album.

The Lee Harvey's - 'Still Angry' (CD album)
I fucking love this band (part 2)! Dublin's finest The Lee Harveys are back with a sublime new album and I was more than thrilled to receive a preview copy from the great man Bitzy himself. 'Still Angry' is the follow up to last year's brilliant debut album 'Gun Crazy' and whilst a lot of bands struggle with that 'difficult' 2nd album syndrome, there are no such problems here for the Lee Harveys. 'Still Angry' contains 10 of the most uplifting trashy 77 inspired garage, pop-infused punk songs that you're ever likely to hear, just bursting with some seriously infectious hooks and melodies. This band are on fire - each track brimming with an anger, passion and energy sadly lacking in a lot of bands today (young bands take note), with Bitzy's political astuteness and social awareness providing inspiration for the albums lyrical content. 'Still Angry' is pure adrenalin rush from the opening track 'Shoot The Lights Out' right the way through to the closing 'Sings With Jesus'. It's been a long fucking time since listening to any band made the hairs stand on the back of my neck, but they did listening to this album. With the risk of sounding like a gushing teen I have to say 'Still Angry' fills my heart with so much pleasure, making me want to bounce and sing along to great tunes such as 'Vegas' and 'Babylon' and I nearly wept with joy listening to 'Sings With Jesus', a song which will have you shouting Hallelujah and praise be the lord for delivering the Lee Harveys unto us! What a fucking band! What a fucking album! A definite 5 outta 5!

Stop Stop Start Again - 'Vampyres' (CD EP)
I fucking love this band! Seriously, this is one of the best bands to come outta Belfast in the last few decades, no question. I have to say I feel quite privileged to have been given a sneak preview of their forthcoming new four track EP 'Vampyres' which is set for release at the Halloween do in the Black Box, Belfast on Oct 31. The EP features 3 new songs '(Why Do Chicks Dig) Vampyres?', 'Dirty Stop Out' and 'Robot Bar' before finishing with a storming cover of the Magazine classic 'Shot By Both Sides'. I'm not gonna give a breakdown song by song this time because 1) I'm too fucking lazy, and 2) I would prefer it if you went out and bought a copy and checked it out for yourselves. If you've seen SSSA live or heard their previous releases then you'll have a fair idea of what to expect - a glam rock stomp with Sex Pistols style power chords and just enough sleaze so your momma won't like it! Maybe slightly less (carry on) campiness this time but still retaining that sense of flamboyance and fun backed by some seriously heavy riffage. These boys sure know how to knock out a good tune or two and they don't come much better than on the 'Vampyre' EP. This is definitely a contender for record (or CD) of the year here at NI Punk! Is there a musical genre called glitter punk already? If not then SSSA are the originators! Don't forget, 'Vampyres' will be released on Oct 31 on the wonderful Time To Be Proud label.

Time To Be Proud EP 12 (CD EP)
All good things must come to an end - so they say. So here it is, the final EP in a series of 12 paying homage to the NI punks of yesteryear. This has been a massive project for the Time To Be Proud crew and I for one would like to thank them for all their hard work. I've really enjoyed this series........
1) The Groundlings - 'Big Time'
A real garage / pub rock feel to The Groundlings cover of Rudi's classic / iconic single 'Big Time'. Did they do it justice? Well, I like it - kinda reminds me of the 101'ers. I imagine if Strummer and co. had ever covered 'Big Time' it would have sounded something like this. Good start...
2) Foy Vance - 'Here Comes The Rain'
This one caught me out, lol. I'm not overly familiar with the Undertones later releases and this song appeared on their 2007 album 'Dig Yourself Deep'. I have to say it's a great song and Vance has truly put his own stamp on this cover version. This one you'll have to check out for yourselves. Maybe the surprise package of the whole series - great stuff.
3) ACME Ltd - 'Visions Of Hooley'
ACME Ltd? This could only be Stu Bailie! A lengthy prose on the life and times of Terri Hooley. Mr Bailie does have a way with words and this is actually quite good. Much better than I expected. Nice one Stu.
4) John D'Arcy - 'War Stories'
Young Mr D'Arcy looks and sounds like a cross between Buddy Holly and Elvis Costello (if you can imagine such a thing)! Here he puts his own spin on the Starjets classic, slowing it right down, rendering it almost ballad like - an ok cover, but not great. I've heard him doing better.
5) The Dogs - 'Self Conscious Over You'
Here's one for the collectors! An NI punk supergroup featuring members of (X)SLF, The Defects and The Outcasts paying homage to The Outcasts with a cracking version of one of that bands best loved tunes. Sticks pretty close to the original albeit with a slightly harder edge. A great finish to a great series!

The Transitions - S/T (7" EP)
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia The Transitions state their influences as Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Chameleons, Wire and TSOL amongst others. However, on this self-titled EP I can only hear the unmistakable sound of early Aussie punk / new wave which is no bad thing in my book as I'm a big fan of 70's / early 80's Australian punk. On the 4 tracks on offer here 'Waiting For The Man', 'Shouting At Silence', 'Live Fast, Die Young', and 'No More Yesterday' I can detect traces of great bands such as Razar, Celibate Rifles and Radio Birdman and that makes this an excellent record in my book! I like this one a lot. 'Nuff said!

Drug Shock - 'Strength In Numbers' (LP)
The debut album from New England band Drug Shock is due for release on October 15 and will be available in a range of different coloured vinyl. As a debut album goes this is pretty darn good! The band cite the likes of Sex Pistols, Damned, Weirdos and The Stooges as influences but those bands aren't immediately recognisable in the bands sound. Drug Shock are instead purveyors of a highly polished punk / oi! amalgam - blistering guitars, rasping vocals and rabble-rousing singalong choruses - more in line with bands like Anti-Heros and Oxymorons. Having said that, one of the best tunes on the album '1976' somehow reminds me of Blitz! There are a number of standout tracks on 'Strength In Numbers' such as '1976' and 'Burn The Bastards' but the best are saved to last in the form of tracks 11 and 12 - 'Street Cred' and 'System Overload'. This is one album definitely worth checking out. Available to pre-order now.

Antagonizers ATL / DDC - Split (7" EP)
Released by Rebel Sound Records on Sept 19 this split EP features 2 of the best street punk bands from Atlanta, USA. First up are Antagonizers ATL who include ex members of Anti-Heros, Vibram 94 and The Breakaways in their ranks. On their two offerings 'Pressure' and 'The Crew' its all raging guitars with Rancid style backing vocals but with an 80's UK punk feel. 2 excellent songs with 'The Crew' just having a slight edge. Next up are DDC (Drink and Destroy Crew) another Atlanta band who only formed in 2011. They're a new one to me but I like what I hear. First track 'Victory' has all the makings of a street punk / oi! classic. It reminds me so much of of our own local heroes Runnin' Riot, so it can only be good. The 2nd track 'Hated' moves in a more Oi! / H/C crossover direction reminding me of those Aussie greats Rust. DDC are certainly a band I'd like to hear more of....
The EP comes in a choice of colours - black, red with black splatter, half'n'half red and black - 200 copies of each. Available from http://rebelsoundmusic.limitedrun.com/

Victim - 'Empty Men' (7" single)
I have always liked Victim, great band, so when I got wind of a new single in the making I admit I was a little excited. I knew Joe and Wes had been working on some new material so I was a wee bit disappointed to find the new (maxi) single contained 3 demo tracks (albeit previously unreleased) from yesteryear and no new material at all! However, having said that, the first two tracks 'Empty Men' and 'The Bus' are a couple of the best tunes the band have ever recorded (especially the latter which is fecking superb)! At the time of recording (late 1980) Victim were well settled in their adopted new home, Manchester, but their Belfast roots shine through on those two songs - punk rock packed with pop sensibilities, with a kind of Rudi meets the Starjets vibe, brilliant stuff indeed. It's a shame the band never released 'The Bus' as a single back in the day, it's so fucking good, who knows where it may have led them. The 3rd and final track 'Another Weird Dream' (the only song the band ever wrote about 'The Troubles') has been lauded by other reviewers but I hate to say it just doesn't work for me. The song was recorded in 1982 and features future Smiths sticksman Mike Joyce on drums but I feel there is too much going on, a mish-mash of styles, like a band trying to find a new direction or as it stands - an unfinished demo? The single was released earlier this month on Spit! Records as a numbered limited edition of 300 only on 7" vinyl and it is worth getting a hold off for the track 'The Bus' alone as its unlikely that it will ever appear anywhere else. Now, when's the new stuff coming out Joe?
Various - 'Ramones Tribute' (CD)
This limited edition CD was lovingly put together by those great folk at Time To Be Proud Records. If you want a copy I'm afraid the only way to get one is to go along to the Ramones tribute night on Sept 13 at the Black Box, Belfast! I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the CD which features covers of 8 Ramones (and related) songs - 2 tracks each from some of the coolest local bands around - No Matter, 3D Shark, Thee Flash Guns, and The Groundlings. Each band ploughs a slightly different furrow and each of them puts their own spin on some of my favourite Ramones tunes. And they all did a great job too, the CD is a cracker. As I said earlier, the CD will only be available at the gig and guess what - the CD is FREE on admission! So what's not to like? You just gotta love those generous people at Time To Be Proud. Steven VX - 'The Boy Looked At Johnny' (EP)
Debut EP from Steven VX on which the young Belfast punk rock troubadour pays tribute to the late, great Johnny Thunders. A lot of you will already be familiar with SVX from his high profile support slots with the likes of 999, Penetration, John Otway (to name just a few) as well as appearances at the BBA Festivals where he is best known for his solo electro / acoustic punkabilly sets. Not forgetting of course, that he also plays / played guitar with VX, Jimmy Segus All Stars and Ex Producers! Anyway, on to the EP on which young Steven ups the anti and really shows just what an emerging talent he is. As well as providing vocals on all the tracks he actually plays all the instruments too! Not only that but SVX also recorded and produced all the tracks himself! And what a smashing job he did too!
The first two tracks on the EP 'Pills' and 'Get Off The Phone' just happen be a couple of my favourite Thunders related songs and SVX plays them the way they should be played - loud, fast and infused with healthy dose of youthful exuberance and a New York meets Belfast swagger. This is the kid at what he does best - rocking the fuck out of that punk rock electric guitar! Track 3 see's Steven revert back to acoustic for a heartfelt rendition of (undoubedly) Thunders finest moment 'You Cant Put Your Arms Around A Memory' - a touching version of a great song. The final track 'Dirty Pretty Things' is an SVX original about the death of Johnny T back in 1991. Once again SVX punks it up, albeit with a more modern approach which showcases another talent, this time as songwriter. A fitting tribute to Johnny Thunders indeed and one that I'm sure would get the JT seal of approval. It certainly gets mine. Excellent debut all round.
At the time of writing the EP is only available to stream on Soundcloud but will be available very soon on CD. Check out the SVX facebook page for further info - https://www.facebook.com/StevenVX.Belfast

Nerdmore - 'S/T' (ep)
Formed a few years ago, Nerdmore began as a solo act for Little Sausage Disorder main man Jarlath Cowan. With one album and three EP's to their name, they've developed into a serious proposition in the studio. And how exactly does this new one match up? 'I Am A Worm' lets the listener know that there's been no change in Nerdmore's modus operandi (bouncy Screeching Weasel/Ramones influenced pop punk) except for the playing and the vocals sounding more confident. It's deceptive tale of non conformity can get lost amongst the riffing, but that's what second listens are for. As an opener, it grabs you by the pubes and throws you around the room. Which is good. 'A Better World Inside Your Head' carries on in the same tradition, with a life affirming guitar solo to compliment the positive message in the lyrics. Retreating into oneself never sounded so good. 'Tomorrow's Another Day' mixes a more aggressive sound with the pop punk. It could do with more belligerent vocals (the 'fuck you' must be the most polite rendition of that term I've ever heard) but musically it certainly works well. 'Because The Good Die Young' is a disappointing closer, as it doesn't go anywhere except for a banjo riff that appears out of nowhere. It's a song you could imagine appearing on their first two EP's, due to the lo fi production and vocals mixed low. Overall, this EP shows that Nerdmore are moving in the right direction (the first two songs are brilliant) but they need to up the ante in the studio by toughening up the vocals on the more heavier numbers. Just to make them stand out from the glut of bedroom bands, and to capture their live sound better. They also really need to start playing Belfast more, as they're currently a band only really known in certain circles. So take the opportunity to see them in McHugh's at No Matter's EP launch.
Not quite there, but good to have them back nonetheless.

The Defects - 'Live In The Ulster Hall' (cd album)
I was lucky enough to witness an outstanding performance by Belfast punk thoroughbreds The Defects as they played support to local legends SLF at the Ulster Hall, Belfast on March 14 2014. Now, thanks to Punkerama Records we get to enjoy their stunning set over and over again on this brilliant live CD. I knew the boys were totally hyped up for this gig but even I wasn't prepared for the intensely powerful performance the band produced in front of a sell out crowd (of mainly diehard SLF fans I might add). The Defects always put on a cracking show but this was on another level, they really were on fire as they machine-gunned their way through a set full of old (and newer) classics - Riot Free Zone / Revelator / Survival / Head On Collision / Traffic Island Castaway (a tribute to Malcolm Owen, The Ruts) / Metal Walls / Dance Until You Drop / Hill Street / Defective Breakdown / 20th Century / Brutality / Get Up Stand Up - super stuff indeed. This is a band captured at their very best. The sound was excellent on the night and comes over crystal clear on the CD which is a real bonus. The Defects stole the show once again and in doing so gained quite a few new fans. SLF were never gonna top that performance! A lot of live albums are hampered by poor sound quality but not this one, the sound is clear and sharp so if you wanna hear the Defects at their very best then go grab a copy of 'Live In The Ulster Hall 2014' - its a killer! The first 100 copies of the CD (of which I have one) was housed in the wrong cover, so if you hurry you can grab an instant collectors item! All subsequent copies will come with the proper cover. As well as the CD, the album is available as a download from i-tunes etc. and a limited number will be released on vinyl later this year. The album will also be on sale at various gigs or online via Punkerama Records
Matty James - 'Last One To Die' (cd album)
This debut solo album from the Fermanagh rawk'n'roll troubador Matty James is quite a departure from his previous works with raucous punk band Setting Of Sirens and horrorpunks Cadaver Club. Here we are treated to (mainly) whiskey-soaked heartfelt acoustic / electric ballads such as the opener 'Leavin', 'Never Learn' and 'By The Cold Light Of Night'. Smokey barroom blues with a Southern twang aptly sums up the feel of this album and one would guess that James found some inspiration from the likes of the Violent Femmes, Nick Cave and Tom Waits. Matty proves himself to be an accomplished songwriter as well as being an assured musician and vocalist. The more uptempo numbers on the album 'Up In Smoke' and 'Same Old Me' are more akin to the sleazy rawk'n'roll of James' old band the Filthy Angels (think Dogs D'amour, QuireBoys, Wildhearts) and its quite fitting that Tyla J Pallas (Dogs D'amour) makes a guest appearance on the title track 'Last One To Die'. 'Better Days' veers from the path slightly with its punky riff; a song which (as noted elsewhere) would not have been out of place on the recent SLF album 'No Going Back'. Overall, an excellent debut album from a man destined to go places. So crack open that bottle of bourbon, light up a cigarette, put your feet up, crank up the volume and enjoy. If you happen to be going to Rebellion 2014 then be sure sure to catch Matty James set on the aucostic stage - you won't be disappointed! 'Last One To Die' is due for release on June 2nd on Pirate Heart Records with Cargo handling distribution. The album will also be available to download from all the usual sources.

3D Shark -'Some Boys Like To hide Away' (CD EP)
The follow up to 2012's 'Neon Teeth' EP from Belfast band 3D Shark. Another 5 tracks of punky-poppy tomfoolery - songs about taking a sickie (Sick Note), snooker champs (Ronnie O'Sullivan), boys (Some Boys), the humble spud (Spuds) and old (dead) football managers (My Name Is Brian Clough)! Someone described 3D Shark as a cross between the Ramones and Half Man Half Biscuit, but I struggle to pin this band down (which is no bad thing). I'll plump for BMX Bandits meet The Barracudas, but also throw a wee bit of Buggles, The Freshies and The Clash into the mix. As this new release proves 3D Shark are all about the humour and good tunes. Fun filled infectious grooves all the way - guaranteed to put a smile on your miserable 'oul bake! By the way, 'My Name Is Brian Clough' is possibly the greatest football related song ever (but where did they steal that riff from? lol)! Released by Time To Be Proud Records......................

The Warriors - 'Dead To Me' (7" single)
New single from those stalwarts of the UK Oi! / streetpunk scene The Warriors. Led by the Last Resort's original singer Saxby, The Warriors deliver a crunching mid-tempo slab of 80's style streetpunk on the A side 'Dead To Me'. This song, with its prowling bass, jagged riffs and catchy chorus, instantly embeds itself in one's brain. This cracking song will feature in the upcoming British flick Gatwick Gangsters. The B side see's the band kick it up a notch with the fast-paced 'No One Provokes Me'. With its urgent vocal delivery, searing guitars and pounding rhythm I get a real Argy Bargy meets the UK Subs feel from it. Surprisingly, I wouldn't class this as a full on Oi! single but it certainly is a prime slice of streetwise punk rock! I likey. The single is a limited edition and comes in a choice of 2 colours - red or yellow.

Hooligan - 'Criminal Damage' (7" EP)
Brilliant new release from Dublin's Hooligan on US label Oi! The Boat Records. I didn't think it could get any better than last years 'No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs' EP but this new slab of punk rock surpasses even that wee gem, and that's saying something! There is a real old school punk feel to the songs akin to classic Angelic Upstarts circa 2 Million Voices, as on previous releases. The rock element apparent on some earlier material has been abandoned in favour of a more full on punk sound. The Upstarts imprint is all over over this record, hardly surprising as main man Dave Linehan (vox / gtr) enlisted the help of ex Upstarts Decca Wade and Nicky Buck on drums whilst Wade and fellow Upstart Mond Cowie shared production duties. Having Tony Van Frater (Cockney Rejects) on guitar and bass duties gives the overall sound an added edge as witnessed on the title track 'Criminal Damage' - a rousing punk anthem with an Upstarts / Rejects feel. More of the same (with a wee touch of Rancid) on the following track 'Street Punk Heroes' , a tribute to those still keeping the spirit of punk alive in 2014. Track 3 'Bastards' is a real bass driven bruiser with an Upstarts meet the Ruts vibe while track 4 'Keep The Faith' is straight outta the Charlie Harper punk rock song book, a fitting end to a fucking fantastic EP. Released on black and beer coloured vinyl.

Dog Company - 'War Stories' (10" LP)
U.S. label Rebel Sound sure know how to pick 'em! 'War Stories' the new album from Dallas band Dog Company is a killer, make no mistake. Presented here are 8 tracks of high octane punk rock'n'roll kicking off with the brilliant 'Elected Enemy'. The band mesmerise us with quickfire, melodic punk tunes with a southern twang taking in elements of Cock Sparrer ('For Our Friends'), The Clash ('Combat Zone') and Mad Parade ('Not Dead Yet') along the way. In fact Joe Blow's vocals remind me a lot of Mad Parade's Joey Kelly - no bad thing in my book as Mad Parade are one of my favourite US bands. The guitars on this album are exceptional, dare I even say electrifying? Needless to say I'm well impressed with this release and I reckon you'd be doing yourself a big favour if you checked it out too. Certainly right up there with the best new releases of this year so far. As always this is a limited release available on 10" vinyl in a choice of black, mustard yellow, olive green or grey, housed in a full colour gatefold sleeve.

The Terraces - 'The Season So Far' (LP)
For those of you who don't know, The Terraces are a Melbourne (Australia) based punk band whose lineup includes Gaz Buckley (formerly of UK band One Way System) on vocal duties and Stephen King (ex Rose Tattoo) on bass. This latest release gathers together tracks from their debut album and EP with 2 bonus tracks. Songs about working class life and football passion are the bands stock in trade, which might make you think that The Terraces are an Oi! band, but they're not. This album is choc full of mid-tempo, anthemic punk rock played with an energy and passion kinda like The Clash meets Social Distortion (with a wee bit of The Business thrown in for good measure). This is fucking good stuff indeed! One of the bonus tracks is a cover of The Clash's 'Complete Control' on which the band do themselves and the song absolute justice. The other bonus track is the new single 'Perfect Company' which is just brilliant. The Season So Far serves as a great introduction to an excellent band (for those unfamiliar with them) and should win them a lot of new fans. This could well be a contender for 'album of the year'! Incidentally, my own favourite track from the album 'Union' kinda reminds me of a punkier Thin Lizzy (which is no bad thing). I like this album a lot. Another 'must buy'!
Once again, this is a limited vinyl release issued on a choice of black, red or grey vinyl by those good folk at Rebel Sound.

Rust - 'Doctors, Lawyers, Strippers & Fools' (LP)
Wow! Simply stunning new album from the Aussie heavyweights Rust. 12 tracks of hard rockin' punk, gathering together songs from the bands 7"s over the past year plus 2 live tracks and 2 previously unreleased tracks. It's a balls-to-the-wall, in-your-face power-trip from the opening 'Ex-Girlfriends' right through to the final track 'Memory Lane'. The band themselves state their sound to be a mix of Motorhead, Rose Tattoo and the 4 Skins, something that I can't argue with as the best elements of all three shine through on songs such as 'Suicide Sunday', 'Sailors Grave' and my favourite track 'Boots And Buckles'. Power, aggression and bloody good tunes are what Rust is all about - even throwing in a fantastic, blistering cover of The Specials 'Concrete Jungle'. Australia has produced some fucking top bands over the years - Rust are up there with the best of them! US label Rebel Sound Records have come up with the goods once again with this superb album. As always this is a limited vinyl release issued on a choice of black, red or white vinyl. This is a 'must buy'!

Shameless - 'Guilty' (pic disc LP)
'Guilty' is the debut album from French band Shameless who ply their trade in 80's style Oi! Here we have 11 mostly mid-tempo songs with gruff vocals and buzzing guitars reminiscent of great bands such as Blitz and The Business. Loads of melody and catchy, sing-a-long choruses are to the fore. In fact 'We Are The Boys' (best song on the album in my opinion) would have fitted in nicely on 'Voice Of A Generation'. 'Vote For Shameless', another highlight of the album has a slight Angelic Upstarts ring to it. Subject matter of the songs consists mainly of tales of drinking, fighting and sticking it to the man, as you'd expect from any self respecting Oi! band. The fact that the songs are sung in English is an added bonus for all us non-French speaking punks / skins. This is a pretty damn good debut from the Lyon based band, I think we'll be hearing a lot more from this band. The album was released in Europe on CD, but this is a limited edition 12" picture disc released on vinyl by Rebel Sound in the USA. Only 500 made, grab one while you can!

Time To Be Proud EP 11 (CD EP)
The penultimate EP in this 12 x EPs series and, yes, it's another cracker. In fact, it's pretty awesome!
1) Buck Eejit - 'Capital Letters'
Excellent cover of Ruefrex's ferocious anti-nuke rant. The Eejits put their own indelible DM bootprint on the song. It's a real punk rock stomper with Paddy's gruff vocal adding a touch of menace to the proceedings. Well impressed with this one.
2) Henry Cluney - 'True Confessions'
Fuck me, I wasn't expecting this! Our Henry (ex SLF) takes the Undertones song and rips it a new one! Belts along at 110mph, like Jim Bob (Carter USM) on speed! Sheer brilliance and best cover of the series to date. Made my day.
3) Hard Case - 'Male Model'
Hard Case have come a long way over the past couple of years and their cover of the Undertones see's them at their best. Another fantastic cover! With its Blitz style intro Hard Case make the song their own and turn it into a streetpunk smash! Superb.
4) The Subway Poets - 'Flowers For All Occasions'
I don't know anything about this band, but their hippy folk / acoustic interpretation of this Ruefrex classic is out of kilter with the rest of the tracks on the EP. That doesn't mean that its bad, far from it as this is quite a moving version of a powerful song. Just out of place alongside all those punks.

Time To Be Proud EP10 (CD EP)
EP10 in a series of 12 from the good folk at Time To Be Proud Records, and another cracker it is too. Only 2 more to go after this one, I hope you're collecting them all?
1) Eighty Four - 'Pressure's On'
Young Belfast punk band Eighty Four tackle the old Rudi classic and I have to say, its an admirable cover. The playing gives off a sense of urgency, its fast and tuneful, and the more I play it, the more I like it. Everyone knows Rudi were my favourite local band, so I'm mighty pleased that Eighty Four have done the song (and themselves) justice.
2) Stiff Little Busker - 'Gate 49'
Seasoned punk rock balladeer Stiff Little Busker weighs in with a smashing acoustic rendition of Stiff Little Fingers' 'Gate 49'. This is beautiful, just beautiful. A big thumbs up from me, well done Doc!
3) Shock Treatment 21 - 'Light Versus Dark'
Wow, here's something a wee bit different, a real blast from the past! ST21 resurrect a song by long gone and virtually forgotten north Belfast band Lovers Of Today, and its a fecking classic! Shades of Peter Perrett / The Only Ones (as you'd expect from a band who took their name from an Only Ones song), and its absolutely gorgeous. Davy T, you're a genius!
4) No Matter - 'Tin Soldiers'
Another Stiff Little Fingers cover, this time by one of the best young bands on the local scene today. No Matter give 'Tin Soldiers' a pop-punk makeover - its fast, fresh and extremely pleasing on the ear. Good stuff.
5) Brian Young - 'Love Is Electric'
When I saw this listed I thought it was a wee bit of a cheat - Youngsy covering one of his own Rudi songs, lol! But this is as far removed from the Rudi sound as you can get. 'Love Is Electric' gets the full rockabilly works, twanging geetars and all. I should have expected that, but somehow didn't see it coming. Another great interpretation of another great song.

Foreign Legion - 'Light At The End Of The Tunnel' (vinyl LP)
These Welsh punks, formed way back in 1984, have the distinction of being the only band from Wales to have graced the stage at CBGB! This album was originally released on CD in the latter half of 2013 by KB Records (Germany) and now in 2014 Rebel Sound (USA) and Aggro Beat (Europe) have teamed up to issue this cracking LP on delicious coloured vinyl. Does it sound as good as it looks? You betcha it does! Foreign Legion prove that they still have the passion and fire in their belly's as they knock out 12 killer punk tunes packed with solid riffs, deft guitar licks and sing-a-long choruses, their blend of punk and oi! reminiscent of bands such as Menace and Angelic Upstarts. The band tackle a range of social and political issues whilst paying homage to their Welsh heritage and life in the Valleys on songs such as 'Miners', 'Regeneration' and 'Market Trader'. Vocalist Marcus Howells spits venom on 'Three Years', a vitriolic attack on the soft-sentencing of child abusers, then on the other hand pays tribute to football legend 'George Best', one of the standout tracks on the album. The other songs on the album are every bit as good but the closing number 'Phoenix From The Flame' steals the show with a furious slab of punk pride (and sounding a wee bit like Slaughter and the Dogs). This is a must have for all Foreign Legion fans (and punk fans in general).

Various Artists - 'Like A Bad Girl Should' (cd EP)
What a fantastic wee label Time To Be Proud Records is turning out to be, deffo one of the best independent labels around today. Always coming up with something just that little bit different and this latest release is a joy to behold. This EP, given away free at the recent Cramps Tribute night in Belfast, features four covers of associated Cramps songs performed by local purveyors of sleazy, fuzzed out rock'n'roll kicking off with greaser kings The Sabrejets souped up rockabilly boogie take on 'Sunglasses After Dark'. Psyched-out 60's garage punk / r'n'b is the order of the day as the Groundlings tear it up on 'I Was A Teenage Werewolf' - like Dr Feelgood on acid! Los Reyez, Belfast's only surf instrumentalists, deliver a frantic version of 'What's Inside A Girl', with added vocals obviously - Link Wray meets The Meteors! Final track 'Elvis Fucking Christ' is a raw garage punk beast, with slightly more emphasis on the 'punk'. Hardly surprising as Thee Flash Guns (who perform the song) feature members of Runnin' Riot / Monkhouse / Thee Radicals. Four killer tracks of raw, primitive, rock'n'roll - Belfast style! Thank you Mr Maxwell!
I've got a feeling there are no copies of the CD left but I would urge Time To Be Proud to consider putting this out on general release as everybody deserves the chance to purchase a copy!

The Traditionals - 'Steel Town Anthems' (vinyl LP)
The Traditionals hail from Pittsburgh, USA and were formed way back in 1997. This is a recent vinyl reissue of their 2011 CD album which includes a free patch and comes in a range of different coloured vinyl. As the name suggests the band adhere to a traditional streetpunk sound nestling nicely somewhere between the likes of the Unseen and Evil Conduct. Coming from an industrial town and a working class background its inevitable that most of the 13 songs on the album relate to their experiences with government, bosses, authority etc - 'Sold Us Down The River', 'Problem With Authority' and 'CIA' to name just a few. There are a couple of choice covers thrown in 'Borstal Breakout' (Sham 69) and 'Violence' (the Oppressed), the latter probably being the best track on the album. The Traditionals don't tread any new ground but this is good solid streetpunk without being exceptional. This is another joint release from Rebel Sound Music (USA) and Longshot Music (Europe).

Mohican Jack - 'Out To Win' (cd album)
This 7 track debut CD from Belfast's purveyors of melodic hardcore, Mohican Jack, is also the first release from new local label Hannibal Records. If you've seen MJ live then you'll know what to expect. Heads down, no nonsense, punk rock played hard and fast with elements of a Motorhead, early Minor Threat and (maybe even) Blitz influence detected in the band's sound. From the opener 'Todays The Day' Mohican Jacks intentions are clear - hit 'em hard and fast, then hit them again! You can feel the aggression erupt from your speakers, no more so than on the live favourite 'Fuck The Police', MJ's best song and the one that gets the punters shouting along at gigs. The rest of the tracks - 'Born A Loser', 'One Way In', 'Two Wrongs' (my own personal favourite), 'Nine To Five' and 'Wrecking Ball' - all have that streak of aggression backed by some sterling guitar work. Unlike a lot of H/C bands who hide behind a wall of unfathomable noise, these boys know how to write (and deliver) a tune or two. An excellent debut for both Mohican Jack and Hannibal Records. Keep an eye out for 'em.

Runnin' Riot - 'Boots & Ballads' (vinyl LP)
You are probably wondering why this classic Belfast streetpunk / oi! album is getting another review here - well that's because its being reissued in the USA by Rebel Sound. The album is due for release on 15th February and comes in a limited edition of 500 copies - 100 on white vinyl, 200 on red vinyl, and 200 on black vinyl. A lyric insert is also included.
This is from our original review (with a couple of small changes) - Runnin' Riot have been the leading lights of the local scene for the best part of twenty years which is a testament to their determination, hard work and popularity! All those years of sweat and graft have paid off handsomely as we see the band reach their zenith on Boots & Ballads. 11 hard, fast, anthemic Oi tunes with catchy-as-fuck singalong choruses kicking off with the mighty Lost Generation and ending on a high with 16 On The Dole. Tales of mindless violence, alcoholism, gluesniffin', unemployment and community breakdown are played with passion and aplomb, with Colin's gruff vocals complimented nicely by Marty's razor sharp guitar licks, Ralph's throbbing basslines and Dan's pounding drums. This is a band really on top of their game and totally comfortable in their own skin. You'd be hard pressed to find a better oi! / streetpunk album than this, anywhere! Very hard to pick an out and out favourite track as its all killer no filler, but if pushed Double The Pain would just edge it! Oh, before I forget, there's a bonus track too - just in case you miss it, like I did on first listen. You have to wait a minute (or two) after track 11 (16 On The Dole) has ended then we get an extra wee treat in the form of Oi Oi Angel which is fucking superb. If the Rezillos did Oi! this is what they'd sound like! Cushla's backing vocal sounds uncannily like Fay Fife on this tune.
In my humble opinion Boots & Ballads is one of the best albums ever released by a N. Irish band and it is certainly in my top 5 of local albums from the past 35 years or so. Great to see it being reissued in the States! Order your copy from Rebel Sound Records

99 Bottles / Total Annihilation - 'Colorado Oi!' (split EP)
US label Rebel Sound deliver the goods once again with this split 7" EP from two stalwarts of the Colorado punk / oi! scene. First up are 99 Bottles who pride themselves on being the first and only Oi! band from Colorado Springs. Their two offerings 'Lost My way' and 'Skinhead Violence' are fast-paced, tuneful streetpunk with some sterling guitar work, similar in style to bands like Anti-Heros and Victory. Enjoyed the 99 Bottles tracks immensely! Next up are Total Annihilation with a more brutal approach on their own 'You Never Were' and a cover of The Templars 'The Glory It Once Was'. Gruff, growling vocals, plodding bass and buzzsaw guitars place this band somewhere between The Bruisers and Aussie band Rust. Good stuff.
The 7" comes in a choice of three colours black / red / white and also includes a free patch! Available from Rebel Sound Records

The Empires - 'Total' (CD album)
'Total' is the debut album from Holywood based band The Empires and a cracking debut it is too. Although it was recorded in the Pit Studios, Dundonald and released in 2013 I've only just got around to getting a copy. The band draw on a number of musical influences such as Foo Fighters,The Black Keys, Queens Of The Stoneage, Nirvana and Green Day amongst others but in spite of that this band is not easy to pigeon hole, and that is a good thing! These upstarts have meshed together elements of grunge, punk, and alternative rock to hone their own full on sound and rip it up in fine style on songs such as Of Corpse My Dear, Ambulance, Common Enemies, and Nova Rigon. This album smacks of teenage attitude, confidence and exuberance, qualities sadly lacking in many young bands today. There is a swagger about this band that has gone some way towards restoring my faith in the youth of today. A band to watch out for in 2014!
Copies of the album can be obtained from the band http://www.theempires.net/ or from the Good Vibrations record shop, Belfast (if there are any left that is.....)

Epic Problem - 'Lines' (7" EP)
'Lines' is the new four track EP from UK band Epic Problem who formed in the winter of 2010 / 11. Although the band features Mackie (ex Blitz) on vocals / guitar Epic Problem are by no means a straight ahead Oi! band. The first 3 tracks Lines / Deny / Sink are uptempo melodic hardcore tunes, with rasping vocals and blitzkrieg guitars conjuring up images of bands such as Leatherface and The Beltones - all good in my book. Speaking of The Beltones, the final track is a cracking cover of their epic tune Weak. Having said that, the merest hint of Mackie's Oi! / streetpunk past can still be detected in the mix. Punk Rock at its finest, awesome stuff! Big Stevie of local band Mohican Jack turned me on to Epic Problem and for that I am extremely grateful. Oh, nearly forgot to mention, if I'm not mistaken the second guitarist in the band is none other than Jake McCullough, who used to be in Belfast band The Dangerfields!
'Lines' is a joint release from Rebel Sound, Rebellion Records and Longshot Music and is a limited edition of 600 vinyl copies which come in a variety of colours.

Time To Be Proud EP9 (CD EP)
Our first review of 2014 and what a way to start - EP9 in a series of 12 from the good folk at Time To Be Proud Records. I must say I'm loving this series, the EP's have thrown up some real gems and I can't wait to hear what's on the last three. So this time around we have ..............
1) Protex - 'You've Got My Number'
The Belfast power-poppers kick things of with their version of the old Undertones classic. Doesn't deviate too much from the original (maybe slightly more uptempo?), the vocals alone enough to differentiate from the 'Tones. Great version, good start.
2) Fubar - 'Gotta Get Away'
Fubar are a popular punk covers band from Belfast. They are playing this kinda stuff all the time so SLF's 'Gotta Get Away' was a piece of cake for them really. Very competent at what they do, Fubar unsurprisingly deliver the goods in fine style.
3) Mohican Jack - 'Winter'
Mohican Jack have been causing a bit of a stir on the local scene with their melodic H/C meets Motorhead (with a wee smidgen of Oi!) style. They certainly didn't choose the easy option when picking The Outcasts 'Winter' to cover. A surprise choice maybe, but it actually suits MJ's aggressive style. For a band who normally play loud and fast they have come up trumps with their version of this slow, brooding number, putting their own stamp on it and giving us a wee taster for their soon to be released debut CD. Nice one.
4) Steven VX - 'Newer Wave 79'
Young Steven has been making a bit of a name for himself in recent times with his acoustic punk / glam / rockabilly solo sets and in doing so has managed to secure quite a few prestigious support slots over the past year. Here he pays homage to the punks of yesteryear with a sterling, passionate rendition of the Ex Producers classic 'Newer Wave 79' (one of my favourite songs from the 70s Belfast scene). I'm glad to see him steer clear of the usual SLF, Undertones, etc covers and go for something a wee bit different. Great stuff, Johnny Hero will be proud of him! Keep an eye on this kid.

Ok, I forgot to mention in the original review that there is an extra 'hidden' track on the CD - track 5 is Steven VX performing a grittier, more gutsy version of 'Newer Wave '79! So, there you have it.
