The Inflatable Dolls - 'Reliving Our Youth' (CD EP)
Dungannon's finest finally got round to releasing their debut EP albeit nearly 40 years after first forming. The band initially got together in 1978 then split in 1981 before reforming in 2003 and have been performing at selected gigs ever since. If this EP had come out in the 70's I've no doubt that the Dolls would have made a big impact on the local scene as well as further afield. Reliving Our Youth is a powerpoppin' punk rockin' ripper. The opening track Fed Up is proper 77 style punk, angry and tuneful. The other four tracks Julie, Mary & Me / Daddy's Girl / Your Secret / Dungannon Angel are lessons in how to write good (nay, great) poppy punk songs. I don't like the term pop punk as it conjures up images of those whiney American bands masquerading as punk. Proper pop punk to me is bands like Buzzcocks, The Boys, The Ramones etc... not to mention the likes of our own Rudi, early Outcasts, Undertones, Moondogs, Protex, and the Xdreamysts. Punk Rock infused with a pop sensibility (and in this case,a recognisable NI punk sound, always a plus point in my book). The Inflatable Dolls have it by the bucketful. Great tunes, buzzing guitars,a vocalist who can sing and a catchy chorus or five. This is right up there with best of the early NI punk releases. Pick of the bunch for me is Dungannon Angel, a sublime song which Dungannon Council have wisely chose as the soundtrack to their Xmas TV advert. I recommend this EP highly. If you want a copy message the band via their facebook page... go on, you won't regret it!

Prins Carl - 'Bow To No One!' (vinyl album)
Sweden's Prins Carl have been back in the studio to record their 3rd full length album and it's a belter! The band have managed to retain the melodic streetpunk vibe of their last release, the 'Wake Up' EP, but the raw, gritty production is more akin to the sound of their first two releases, and in my opinion, all the better for it. This is definitely their best album to date. Songwise the band try to steer clear of the stereotypical drinking / fighting songs favoured by many streetpunk / oi! bands and instead focus on social issues especially those pertaining to the working class and the unemployed. Having just said that, one of the best songs on the album, 'I Only Had A Few' is a terrific drinking song! Of the other 9 tracks on the album, the final song 'Submit' is a heartfelt, gritty, acoustic punk anthem while the rest are high-octane, adrenalin fuelled melodic streetpunk tunes of the highest order. Hard to pick a favourite but at a push I'd plump for 'Little Puppet' which is as good a punk song as you'll hear anywhere. I've lost count of the number of times I've hit the repeat button on that one! 'Damaged' and 'War' are also outstanding tracks... in fact all the songs are fucking class. Loving this album, great stuff. If you're into bands like Perkele, Bishops Green, Lion's Law, Rude Pride, Wretched Ones etc then you'll love these guys! I don't normally do scores / stars or whatever but this is deffo a 5 outta 5 in my book. 'Bow To No One' is a co-release by Noise Of Sweden and Rebel Sound (USA). It is set for US release on December 17th, with the European release to follow in January 2017. Get yer pre-orders in now.... https://www.facebook.com/prinscarlpunk/

VA - 'Cashing In On Christmas Vol.7' (vinyl album)
Well, the silly season is nearly upon us once again and to herald in the season of goodwill, US label Rebel Sound have released their now annual Xmas cracker. 'Cashing In On Christmas Volume 7' is here to help us celebrate in true punk and oi! style. These are the best Xmas punk comps around and Vol 7 is possibly the best one yet. Not too many stinkers this time, in fact only one - sorry Bastard Monster but Christmas Of Doom kinda sucks! Highlights this time include The Automatics - 'Peace On Earth' (brilliant track from the old 77 UK punk band - remember their classic 'When The Tanks Roll Over Poland' single?) and yer man from The Dwarves, He Who Cannot Be Named, serves up a festive treat with the fabulous 'War On Christmas' which gets my vote for best song on this years offering. JJ Speedball (featuring JJ from Aussie glam / bovver band Shandy) come a close 2nd with the punk r'n'r stomper 'Xmas Twist' - get yer dancin' shoes on for that one. Infa Riots 'Emergency' gets an Xmas makeover in the form of the Missile Toads - 'Decorate The Chrismas Tree', while streetpunk / oi! singalongs come courtesy of Old Breed, Bonecrusher, Hardknocks, Seaside Rebels and Riot Gun. Poland's Lazy Class deliver some blistering punk on 'Sick Of It All', Germany's 7er Jung mix things up a little with the acoustic punk ballad (complete with horns) 'Winter Solstice', a celebration of Paganism. An honourable mention goes to Germany's Pisstons for the fantastic 'Do They Care Its Christmas' which starts of like something from The Beatles 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' album before morphing into a venom soaked punk rager! I know punky Xmas songs are not everyones cup of tea, but hey, there are some cracking tunes on here (as on previous volumes) so crank up the volume, crack open a beer and go stuff that turkey! As always, the album is available in a choice of colours (or colors if you're in America)... this time snow white or coal black. You can order / purchase the album here http://www.rebelsoundmusic.com/.
Joe Zero - 'Syria' (promo single)
Joe Zero 'Syria' (Promo Single-Official Release Date 07.12.16)
The hardest working man in punk rock 'Joe Zero' delivers yet again.
Out of the blue, and hot on the heels of his recently released, and very well recieved debut solo album Scorpio Unbound, comes the single 'Syria'. This is a big song, with a well written thought provoking anti war lyric, and a top notch production (complete with getting things into perspective sleigh bells, accompanied by the real sounds of war). In my opinion Joe has written a future classic here, a Happy Christmas (War Is Over) for 2016, if you like. It's easily one of the best songs he's ever composed, and I don't say that lightly, considering this guys extensive back catalogue.
'Syria', is set for release via Bandcamp on the 07.12.16, and there's also a same day video premiere.
This song deserves to be heard well beyond the narrow confines of any punk scene, so help spread the word, and lets get this Christmas song (of sorts) the attention it so rightly deserves.
Well Done Joe.
Joe Donnelly, Belfast (01.12.16)
Just thought I'd like to add my tuppence worth here. Great review from Punky Joe who is spot on in his assessment of the song 'Syria', which, in my humble opinion, is fucking epic! I've been a long time admirer of Mr Zero's songwriting - initially with his band The Androids, then Victim, and more recently on his debut solo album 'Scorpio Rising'. But this song has taken Joe's songwriting to another level altogether and if 'Syria' isn't this years Christmas no.1 then there's no justice in this world (well we know there's no justice in this world). Single of the year. You gotta buy this....... GT 04/12/16

Madhouse - 'Beyond The Edge Of Reason' (Cd album)
Here it is, at last... the debut full length album from Belfast psychobilly band Madhouse (formerly known as Going Full Retard). Was it worth waiting for? Of course it fucking was! A nice blend of originals and cover versions (with a few surprises) on this 11 track cracker. Great to see that frontman Billy Riot has lost none of that acerbic wit that was prevalent in the song lyrics of his previous bands Hard Case and The Violent Fuckwits. Same goes for the 'havin' a laugh and havin' a say' ethic as evidenced here. The album gets of to a rockin' start with Hell To Pay, a song decrying the western worlds policy of bombing civilians in retribution for acts of terrorism! Next up is a more uptempo number with some sizzling guitar work on show. Our Brothers Bring Us Down is (according to the band) a socialist anthem of sorts, highlighting the failings of the Labour Party and Trade Unions over the last 100 years. Up the workers! Surprise number one, and a pleasant one at that, is a curious cover of the Proclaimers song Over 'N' Done With which borrows heavily from Iggy Pops The Passenger. Its played slightly faster than the original and although the chorus remains the same the verses have been changed entirely to spin a tale about old rockabillys. Safe to say its one of the highlights of the album. Mama Said is a country rocker / spaghetti western hybrid about a violent, psychotic sociopath. If you like twanging guitar riffs you'll love this one. Nailed To The Floor is probably my favourite original song on the album. Here the band claim to have invented psycho-swing, haha. Who am I to argue? Great tune with suitably sick lyrics. Surprise number two - a cover of Dr Feelgoods 1979 hit single Milk And Alcohol. I love Dr feelgood, I love that song and... I love the Madouse cover. Need I Say More? Surprise number three - is a psycho-ska cover of the Specials classic Rat Race and it really is rather good, like it a lot. Things get a bit more serious and more personal on Destiny's Day a song about Billy's son's slow recovery from a debilitating illness. A touching tribute to Scotty Riot's determination to hold on to his hopes and dreams in the face of adversity. Worst Case Scenario see's the band rockin' out on a wee tune about someone with a violent lifestyle. Rock'n'roll with a punk edge. No 'probably' about the next track No Hiding Place. This IS my favourite band original! This is a hard hitting song about the Kincora Boys Home Scandal. Its a haunting wee tune with a brooding bassline which see's psycho Billy at his lyrical best. Stunning stuff. I have just noticed that the song has mysteriously been omitted from the track listing on the CD cover. Whats the crack, like? Best of the cover versions is saved for last and a great way to end the album with a sterling version of the Cramps classic Dames Booze Chains and Boots. Dirty, sleazey rock'n'roll, brilliant. So there you go, get this slice of psychotic Belfast psychobilly lunacy on your Xmas wish list or better still just go out and buy it if you fancy a wee bit of rockin' around the Christmas Tree. VA - 'Born To Lose - Johnny Thunders Tribute EP' (CD EP)
Friday 18th November sees the return of the now annual Johnny Thunders tribute night in Belfast and once again those cool dudes at Time To Be Proud Records have put together the now customary limited edition commemorative CD. This one is limited to just 100 copies and will only be available at the gig, so if you want a copy I suggest you get along sharpish to the Pavilion, Belfast on Friday night. The EP kicks off in fine style with Steven VX and The Art Rats blistering cover of 'Too Much Junkie Business'. This was my first encounter with young Steven VX's latest combo and I have to admit to being well impressed. These guy's have that sleazy punk'n'roll down to a (Johnny) T! Cracking start. Thee Dirt Byrds then weigh in with a bruising version of one of my favourite songs 'One Track Mind'. The scuzzy garage punkers put their own frantic stamp on the Heartbreakers classic and come up trumps. Another winner. Belfast's greaser kings The Sabrejets close the proceedings with a suitably rockin' cover of 'Tie Me Up (Love Knot)'. Maybe not the most obvious song to cover but the twanging rockabilly guitars work well on this one. Everyone knows that Sabrejets head honcho Brian Young is a huge Thunders fan so its only fitting that this band pay tribute in their own distinctive way. A fitting finale to another wonderful offering from Time To Be Proud Records, doing their (big) bit to support local bands. Oh, by the way, Thee Dirt Byrds track is incorrectly listed as 'Born To Lose' on the CD cover, making this collectors item even more collectable! Cadaver Club - 'It's Always The Quiet Ones' (CD album)
Halloween is coming - and you know what that means kids? Yes, a brand spanking new album from your favourite bodysnatchers Cadaver Club! Those rockin' fiends from Fermanagh are back to haunt your dreams with 13 (unlucky for some) blood curdling bubblegum punk classics. The horror punk genre has thrown up some horrifically bad bands, all image and no substance but thankfully Cadaver Club don't fall into that category. These guys (and gal) have the image down to a tee but more importantly, they have the tunes to match. This local band are right up there with the wonderful Groovie Ghoulies and the fab B Movie Monsters. CC are great fun, a tongue in cheek musical equivalent to comedy / horror films such as Sleepy Hollow, Little Shop Of Horrors, Return Of The Living Dead, Idle Hands and Scooby Doo! Yes, thats right, I did say Scooby Doo. Whenever I listen to the opening track 'Afraid Of Me' I can't help but think of Scooby and Shaggy running frantically around some haunted house with all sorts of ghosts and ghouls in hot pursuit. Fast paced, bubblegum punk at its best, you couldn't ask for a better opener. As on their previous album, the Ramones / Misfits influences are still there, especially on tracks such as the aforementioned opening track plus 'Transylvania Twist', 'The Coppercomb Witch' and 'The Quiet Ones' but the standout track for me personally is 'Follow Me To Hell' which owes as much to 1950's teen angst r'n'r as it does to 1970's punk. It's a slower, heart stirring number with a big big chorus, wonderful stuff. I defy anyone not to sing along. Another standout is the closing track 'See You On The 31st', a song that wouldn't have seemed out of place on Alice Cooper's 'Welcome To My Nightmare' album, its a slow burning, haunting tune with great lyrics. Lyrically, Cadaver Club are head and shoulders above most bands in the horror punk genre, and probably head and shoulders above most bands irrespective of musical genre! Check out the lyrics to songs such as 'Penny Dreadful' and 'When Your Friends Just Won't Stay Dead' for proof. Every song tells a story. If you enjoyed the band's debut album 'A Fate Worse Than Life' then you'll love, love, love 'It's Always The Quiet Ones'. This album demands inclusion on all Halloween party playlists. In fact, its the only album you'll need to get that party pumping! 'It's Always The Quiet Ones' is due for release on 28th October just in time for the witching season but can be pre-ordered now from Pirate Heart Records.

Joe Zero - 'Scorpio Unbound' (CD album, promo)
You'll all be glad to hear there's gonna be no boring musical history lesson from me here, as a prelude to this compact review of the first and apparently not the last solo album from the one and only Joe Zero (aka Joe Moody), an original NI Punk good guy. 'Scorpio Unbound' is a lyrically provocative & madly eclectic 20 track affair, from a man who is clearly on a creative roll at the moment, and who doesn't let restrictive musical boundaries get in his way. Mr Zero's prolific streak of four quality albums (Androids, Victim (2), Solo) in only four years 2012 -2016 (and their accompanying singles) is quite an achievement in itself. He could give the Duracell bunny a run for its money, with all the hyper energy on show here.
Anyway onto the music, where so many manic influences collide throughout - from the Kenneth Anger(esque) album title, through to the Pop Punk, Ska, Glam Metal, Country & Western, Madchester, 80s Indie, Acoustic, Electro, Prog, Dub, Jigs & Reels phew! I was hearing. And if that's not confusing enough for you, then there's the ghosts from the past of The Vibrators, The Ruts, Sniff N' The Tears, Bob Dylan, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Lou Reed, Janes Addiction, Iggy Pop all making their subliminal presence felt. The most immediate tracks for me were, Seconds (A cool opener), Destination Satan, Who She Was (Joe throws the first of the many curveballs to come), The Corpse That Snored (Glam Dum-De Diddily-Dum), Scorpio Unbound, and When The Ice Breaks (Creepy repetitive toy town piano driven arty electro demo). And do you know something?, track listing madness may reign supreme here, but regardless of why its intentional or not, this album against the odds actually works.
Long overdue hometown gigs surely have to follow this release, Joe. Well Done Mate, See Ya Soon.

Neil Trelford - 'The Youth Club' (Book)
The Youth Club is the debut novel from local author Neil Trelford and is loosely based on his own experiences as a young Mod in 1980's N. Ireland. The story is set mainly in the working class housing estates of a small town near Belfast and follows a group of young friends (Neilly, Herbie, Mouse and Mickey) as they make the transformation from 'normal' kids into fully fledged Mods after their initial encounter with the Mod Revival at the weekly disco in their local youth club. The Munchkin Mods (as they were later named by the older Mods) soon found themselves immersed in mod culture and the local scene. Fashion became a passion (Fred Perry polo shirts, parka's, desert boots, and tonic suits) as did the music (The Jam, Secret Affair, Merton Parka's, Lambretta's, The Chords etc) and subsequently, record collecting. The book is laced with humour as Trelford tells of the rivalry between the different youth cults - Mods, Punks, Rockers, Teds and Skins, which was mostly good-natured banter but on occasion turned a little more serious, and trouble with the police. Quadrophenia (the original novel by Alan Fletcher, more so than the film) is an obvious influence here, and is referenced by the author a number of times with the books main character Neilly sometimes equating his plight with that of Jimmy. The Youth Club is ultimately a coming-of-age tale of friendship, first love, hope, mischief-making, broken hearts, and well, basically dabbling in things that young teens dabble in! The high's and low's of growing up are expressed in an engaging manner and in a strange kinda way reminds me of S.E. Hinton's great coming-of-age novel The Outsiders. Well worth a read for anyone who grew up in the 80's (or didn't!) or anyone interested in youth (sub) cultures.

The Turn - 'Rough EP' (digital EP)
Six tracks of raging punk on this debut EP from young Limerick band The Turn. Short, sharp, hook laden tunes topped by a vocalist spitting venom on titles such as Gimme A Break, Just Waiting and Big Brother. All songs weigh in at less than 3 minutes, the shortest being all of 1 minute 16 seconds long! It's been quite a while since I heard a band this fucking angry, yep The Turn are young, loud and snotty! In another review Irish punk legends Paranoid Visions described the band as sounding like a cross between Rudimentary Peni and Black Flag, I reckon that's not too far of the mark. If you like your punk to be loud, fast and angry then check this wee band out. The EP is available as a free download on their bandcamp page so get your asses over there pronto.....

The Lee Harveys - 'Bullet For The President' (CD album)
The eagerly anticipated 3rd album from Dublin's The Lee Harveys.... can 'Bullet For The President' live up to the critical acclaim of the first 2 albums 'Gun City' and ' Still Angry'? Of course it fucking can! I wouldn't expect anything less from these lads. For any band to rattle off 3 consistently good albums is a feat in itself but to produce 3 consistently great albums is nothing short of amazing. On this latest offering the band come out firing from the hip, the trashiness of the previous 2 albums now replaced with a more hard edged melodic sound while still retaining that poppy punk blitzkrieg that we first fell in love with. Although the essence of the band is firmly rooted in 77 punk (think Radiators From Space, Undertones, Outcasts, Ramones, Clash etc...) The Lee Harveys are certainly not a retro or cliched punk band. This is fresh, vibrant punk rock for the modern age. Songs such as 'Be What You Want To Be', 'Susie' and 'Lorraine' encapsulate perfectly the singalong punky rock'n'roll that permeated those first two albums but 'Bullet For The President' provides proof (not that it is needed) that the Lee Harveys are no one trick pony by offering up a few surprises, no more so than the frantic, somewhat haunting 'Modern Holocaust', the passion displayed on this track enough to send shivers up your spine. Equally so, the mesmerising final track 'Horses' with its big swirling guitar sound producing a sense of urgency and foreboding akin to the Adverts 'Great British Mistake' or funnily enough Patti Smith's 'Horses'! No Lee Harveys album would be complete without the band setting their sights on the dark side of the American dream and here they duly oblige with the wonderful 'American Jesus' and the title track 'Bullet For The President'. Two mid-tempo rockers perfectly showcasing Bitzy's distinctive vocals and more importantly his intelligent, acerbic lyrics aided and abetted by those ringing, stinging guitars. Every song on the album is a winner, it's a hook laden punk rock masterpiece but one song in particular keeps drawing me back again and again - 'She's Inside', pure fucking genius! The Lee Harveys have raised the bar once again and are possibly the best band on planet punk at this moment in time! Do yourselves and the band a favour and buy this album. I fecking love The Lee Harveys and I hope you will come to love them too. The album is due for release on 23rd July on the FOAD Musick label. An album launch takes place on that date in Thomas House, Dublin........

Takers & Users - 'Backbars And Alleyways' (CD album)
Blistering debut album from new Oi / streetpunk heroes Takers & Users. This Belfast band have made quite an impact on the local scene since their inception in late 2014. Last year's impressive 4 track EP gave us a wee taste of what to expect and it obviously caught the attention of German label Randale Records who had the good sense to release this album. And, its a fucking belter! 10 full on loud, fast working class anthems with their obligatory catchy as fuck choruses plus a wee acoustic lament to finish. The 4 tracks from last years EP - The Neurotics Were Right / Sometimes / Bootboys / Buckfast Blues - are included on the album (and rightly so) alongside newer songs such as the opener 'Folks On The Hill', 'Body Bags', 'Battle Cry' and the brilliant 'Belfast Punk Rock City'. However, my own current favourite is 'Greed' with its wonderful singalong chorus ... smash down the walls, fuck the system, fuck the laws... that one gets the blood pumping! Also included is a cracking cover of Runnin' Riot's 'Judge Jury And Executioner'. 'Crack A Lid' is the wee heartfelt lament at the end, where the band encourage us to raise a glass to friends passed but also let us know that its still ok to live our lives and follow our dreams - We're Here For A Good Time, Not A Long Time! Sound familiar? The fact that the album is dedicated to the late, great Colin 'Riot' McQuillan should give you a clue. Runnin' Riot are an obvious influence on the band (and yes, we know Sprouley the drummer was the original sticksman for RR) but it would be unfair to compare the two, although that will inevitably happen. It's great to see a band like Takers & Users keeping the punk'n'Oi flame burning with a rousing passion and an ear for a good tune. Darzo's gritty, sometimes frantic, vocals complimented nicely by Sprouley's pounding drums and Kerr's sterling guitar work. I always loved Hard Case's guitar sound and it great to hear Kerr (ex Hard Case) add a little bit of that to the mix. Overall, as good a debut album as you could wish for. Keep 'er lit lads.
The album is available on CD as well as 12" black or green vinyl and comes with a lyric / photo booklet. Copies can be purchased from Dragon Records, Belfast, the Takers & Users bandcamp page, Randale Records online store or from the band at any of their gigs.

Los Reyes - 'Los Reyes' (CD album)
Belfast Surf City, who'dda thunk it? Los Reyes offer up 10 scintillating surf instrumentals on this, their debut album on the Time To Be Proud label. Los Reyes roughly translates as The Kings, quite apt in this case as these guys are kings of reverb and twanging guitars. Listening to tunes such as Mile Zero, Avante, Bahia Honda, Shark Fin and El Malo, to name just a few, will transport you back to a more carefree time. A time of California sunshine, golden sands, riding the waves, surf boards, beach parties, bikini clad beauties, cold beer, B movies, cadillacs and pontiacs, or in our case - a day trip to Portrush, a stick of rock, candyfloss, a ride on the dodgems, a paddle in the cold sea at White Rocks and a bag of chips on the East Strand! As far as debut albums go this is top notch, packed with killer tunes and a real feelgood factor. A readymade soundtrack for the long hot sunny days ahead. Now, where did I put that Hawaiian shirt? The CD is available online from Time To Be Proud Records (and I'm sure all good Belfast record shops).

Thee Dirt Byrds - 'Everybody Hates Thee Dirt Byrds' (vinyl album)
Oh yeah! I've been looking forward to this one for quite a while now, having been suitably impressed with the bands early demos and the more recent 'Coz I Luv U' EP. I knew this album was gonna be good before I even played it, but it's not just good, it's fucking brilliant. Yep, well impressed with this one, and the fact that it's on luscious black vinyl makes it all the better. Keith, John and Bob are all seasoned musicians having been around the block more than once with bands such as Monkhouse, Runnin' Riot, Wasted Talent and McBrides Mate Dinger to name just a few, and their collective pedigree shines through here. Scuzzy garage punk blending the sounds of 60's bands such as The Sonics and The Bold with 70's bands like MC5, The Stooges and The Heartbreakers. Three standout tracks 'Sorrows', 'All I Wanna Do' and 'Do Not Disturb' all give off a sleazy 70's New York punk vibe a la The Heartbreakers and it is interesting to note that Ralph Riot contributed to all 3 songs. Most of the songs on the album originally appeared on the 'Coz I Luv U' EP and the early promo CD so you can scroll down the page and read those reviews to save me having to repeat myself (cause I'm a lazy bastard, lol). Suffice to say the songs sound so much better on vinyl and a few have been tweaked such as 'Look Me In The Eyes' which is much faster on this LP. Keith Farr still sounds (vocally) like a complete psycho, check out the aforementioned 'Look Me in The Eyes' but even more so on the aptly named 'Beast' which is a real beast of a song, sounding like a totally fucked up, demented rip-off of the classic 'Stepping Stone' and utterly brilliant. One of my favourite newer tracks is 'Scooby Dance' - a wigged out instrumental conjuring up images of wild teen 60's movies, go-go girls and tassels! Great stuff. The heavy garage / r&b crunch of 'She's Not Coming Back', complete with feedback and fuzzy guitar is another gem as is the raw punk killer 'King Of The Carnies' (actually, King Of The Carnies was originally done by Farr's previous band Thee Flash Guns alongside Ralph Riot). 'Everybody Hates....' is one helluva debut album, raw and sleazy, just how rock'n'roll was meant to be. I for one don't hate Thee Dirt Byrds, I friggin' luv 'em! Crackin' album and a definite contender for album of the year! Released by the wonderful Time To Be Proud Records (who else) and also available on CD. Just a wee mention for the cover, a big thumbs up for the rip-off of The Beatles 'A Hard Days Night' album cover, love it.

Aggressors BC - 'EP' (7" EP)
I'm a wee bit late with this one as it was released in the latter part of 2015, but better late than never, huh? Aggressors BC hit us up with four new boss sounds from Titanic town -side 1) The Hallways / Crossroads - side 2) One Boss Story / Time To Go on this cracking wee 7" EP (isn't it great to see all this stuff coming out on vinyl?). The 2013 album The Tone Of The Times highlighted the depth of talent this band possess's with their brilliant fusion of ska, reggae & dub but this new(ish) release lifts the band to another level altogether. Cool, sophisticated reggae / ska with a social and political awareness apparent in the lyrics of each song. The dual vocals from Marty (ex Runnin' Riot) and Patreece play off one another beautifully and sound better than ever. The addition of Marty's old Runnin' Riot sidekick Ralph on bass has certainly played a major role in upping the anti. Each song on the EP is a surefire dancehall floor filler, so if you are on the look out for the best in contemporary reggae then look no further than this band. Pretty amazing stuff. The EP (also available on CD with six bonus tracks) was released by Belfast label Black North Records and is available to purchase on the bands bandcamp page.

Runnin' Riot - 'Rarities' (CD album)
2 years in the making and lovingly compiled by band members Marty and Ralph, 'Rarities' is a fitting tribute to Colin McQuillan (RIP) and everyone else that played their part in the Runnin' Riot story. Despite the continuous line-up changes over the years, the spirit and attitude of this hard working band remained a constant, winning them an army of fans not just here at home in N. Ireland but in all corners of the world. This 15 song collection gathers together some choice demos, unreleased tunes, rare compilation tracks and tracks from the bands only 7". Chock-full of working class anthems (the bands forte), this is Oi! / streetpunk at its very best. As expected, there's not a duff track in sight, and the quality of the demo versions of some of the bands best known / loved songs ie Lost Generation / When The Boots Fly In / Keep The Faith is exceptional and its a real bonus to finally get to hear them. Also included is a cracking version of the Blitz classic 'Warriors' but the standout track for me is the demo version of 'We're Not Gonna Be Used' which is fucking outstanding. The bands mantra of having a laugh and having a say is evident throughout the album, no more so than on the track 'Laughing Boys' on which the Riot tackle a serious subject (the infamous Northern Bank robbery) and inject it with a dollop of Belfast humour. I can't recommend this album highly enough so if fist-pumping, adrenalin fuelled punk'n'Oi is your thing then go grab a copy of the album now. Released on the Black North Records label and available through the Runnin' Riot bandcamp page. The tragic unexpected demise of Runnin' Riot has left a gaping hole in the local scene and I doubt we'll ever see a band of this calibre from Belfast again. Thanks for everything.

3D Shark - 'Jackie Fullerton Says...' (CD Single)
2016 - 30 years since the N. Ireland football team last qualified for a major tournament and the first time they have ever qualified for the Euro finals, so roll on France in June. Local band (and NI fans) 3D Shark help to kick off the celebrations with their own fitting tribute to our footballing heroes, the wonderful 'Jackie Fullerton Says (I'm In Heaven When We Score)'. The song is a reworking of the band's 'My Name Is Brian Clough' which appeared on an earlier EP, and at the time of it's release I commented that it was possibly the best ever football related song. Well, this new version featuring the legendary Jackie Fullerton himself is the best football related song ever! It was a stroke of genius on the bands part in getting Jackie to provide the vocals on this riff laden masterpiece which is a must have for all NI football fans as well as NI music lovers. 3D Shark - putting the fun back into football. Check out the video for the song on youtube, it's a cracker. Song number two on the CD single 'We're Going To The Euro's' is a jaunty wee indie powerpop tune with lines such as 'Michael O'Neill, has sex appeal'. It's a fun filler but completely overshadowed by the brilliance of the main track. All set to be a collectors item so get a copy while you still can. Time To Be Proud Records come up trumps once again. Support local music and support Norn Iron at the Euro's.....

Matty James - 'The Road To No Town' (CD album)
The rawk'n'roll troubadour from Fermanagh is back with a new album. 'The Road To No Town' is the follow up to the acclaimed 'Last One To Die' and this time Matty is in full country (punk) rock mode. When I say country, think Angry Johnny or Jayke Orvik as opposed to, let's say Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earl or (god forbid) the likes of Garth Brookes! The album opens with the uptempo title track 'The Road To Nowhere', which rattles along nicely with some tasty fiddle action reminding one of the Violent Femmes or even the Legendary Shack Shakers. The anthemic 'Sticks And Stones' (the first single from the album) retains the Tyla J Pallas influence that was evident on the first album, the harmonica and searing riffs really lifting the song. 'Heavy Heart', a melodic country rock ballad slows the pace a little while the next track 'Oh My Darlin'' with its rockabilly stomp, lifts the tempo and gets the toes tapping. 'Win Or Lose' is another powerful ballad notable for (what sounds like) a steel guitar. Up next is a rollicking wee sea shanty titled 'Gun Powder'. Here, Matty moves into pure Charlie Daniels territory complete with some crazy fiddling courtesy of another one of Fermanagh's favourite sons, Pat McManus. 'Money And The Devil' is a cracking wee country blues number made all the more memorable by some scintillating trumpet playing. The harmonica comes out again on the uplifting acoustic ballad 'Hold On' then Matty notches things up a gear with the fast paced punkabilly rant 'Dissatisfied' before closing the album with another powerful ballad in the shape of 'Cut With Dust'. An excellent album all round and like I said after reviewing 'Last One To Die' - go crack open that bottle of bourbon, light up a cigarette, put your feet up, crank up the volume and enjoy! The album is set for release on 29th April on the Pirate Heart label but can be pre-ordered now on Amazon, i-tunes etc. And just in case you didn't know Matty is also a member of the bands Cadaver Club, Filthy Angels and the Tyla J Pallas Band.

Hooligan Crooners - 'Hell Yeah!! It's Hooligan Crooners' (maxi EP)
This is the debut release from Hooligan Crooners, a bunch of old school punks whose members are based in France and Holland. In fact, one of them actually played in a band that released a single on the Good Vibrations label, so there's a wee bit of an NI connection. Ok, so what's on offer? Well, for a start you get 8 tracks, pretty generous for a debut EP don't you think? Four loud guitar driven punk'n'roll originals - Frankly, Bug, Hell Yeah! and the magnificent Kings Of Summer - all bursting with energy, enthusiasm and a certain amount of sophistication. This is punk rock for grown ups but I'm sure the more savvy of today's youth will get it too. I hate to make comparisons but as a reference point I'd suggest a blend of the Boys punk-pop perfection and the more melodic Social Distortion. That doesn't really do the band justice though as they do have their own quite distinctive sound and its nice to hear a punk singer who actually sings as opposed to shouting and / or screaming. I can see how the name came about as vocalist Nan is a bit of a crooner and there's a few reformed hooligans in the ranks, lol. The remaining tracks are all remixes of the four already mentioned courtesy of the likes of Matt Dangerfield (The Boys), James Atkin (ex EMF) and Ollie Dollboy. All in all, this is a pretty terrific debut and I'm already looking forward to hearing more from these guys (which shouldn't be too long as the new release should be out around April 2016). The EP is available as a download from bandcamp or CD from the bands own PWVA record label.

Stage B - 'Centipede' (CD album)
Belfast's gothpunk heroes Stage B return to the fray with that 'difficult' 2nd album. Nothing difficult about it for these guys though as they deliver another masterpiece on the 11 track 'Centipede'. Losing original vocalist Charlie Reilly could have spelt disaster for the band but guitarist Des Potter stepped up to the mic and his own vocal style compliments the new songs nicely. Centipede is not as dark or heavy as its predecessor People Of The Book, chinks of light appearing through cracks in that great big wall of sound, the veil of darkness slightly lifted revealing an album of outstanding beauty. Potter's vocal strangely reminds me of Bryan Ferry adding to the overall early Roxy Music meets The Wake sound on songs such as Crescent Moon, Crash'n'Burn, Channel 10 Night Radio, and Czech Assassin. Two years in the making 'Centipede' was well worth waiting for, Stage B are masters of their art. Seamlessly blending the best dark wave, industrial and goth elements to create their own unique sound. Big songs, lavish production - listen to this with the headphones on and the lights out. There is a lot going on in those 11 tracks, even hints of Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk and Xmal Deutshland, you dont want to miss anything. All the song titles (as well as the album title) begin with the letter C, the significance of which I do not yet know! This album should be played on every late night radio show and in every underground niteclub from Belfast to Berlin and beyond. Coming soon on Punkerama Records (I think). The artwork was nicked from Punky Joe (sorry Joe) and it's not the cover of the album. I've got a promo copy of the album minus the artwork. Anyhow, another Belfast band who should be massive, lets make it happen!

Victim - 'Swan Songs Too' (CD album)
The new Victim album is set for release in March but thanks to main man Joe Moody I've been given a sneak preview via this promo copy. Swan Songs Too is the follow up to last years brilliant Swan Songs, although not a follow up as such, more of a continuation as in Swan Songs part two. Needless to say this is every bit as brilliant as its predecessor. If, as the title suggests and Victim are finally hanging up their guitars then they are going out in style. If you are expecting a stereotypical punk album then look elsewhere. The nucleus of the band Joe Moody and Wes Graham have been writing, recording and performing for the best part of 40 years (ulp!) and have moved on from the fired up 3 chord punk of their youth. There is still a punk undercurrent running throughout the album but the band have shifted to a more guitar driven indie sound. The band showcase their technological wizardry on the Sigue Sigue Sputnik style opener 'Confrontation (Jim Said)' then shift gears for the straight up rocker 'Last Train To Hell', the lyrics of which are a joy to behold. Moody and Graham then pay homage to the Only Ones (a huge influence on Victim) with a startling awesome cover of 'Another Girl, Another Planet' - a semi acoustic affair with a beautiful orchestral finale - gonna stick my neck out here and say this is even better than the original! Three big sweeping ballads follow - 'Secrets', 'It Takes Time' and 'Sister' - blending the best of the La's, Only Ones and Velvet Underground - in this listeners mind. 'Kama Sutra' is a bit of an alt. country rocker whilst 'Shadows & Souls' has a folkier feel. The final track 'Resolution (Jim Said)' is more technological showboating, the shadow of Genesis P. Orridge lurking in the background. But hey, we're not finished, the band kindly donating 3 bonus tracks - shades of early Ministry on the bruising 'Just Like Iggy' (fuckin' fantastic tune), the more whimsical campfire singalong 'The Whiskey Song' and the 3 part finale 'How Do You Spell Mnemonic' / 'Bardo Mantra' / 'Jim Said'. I really hope Victim aren't calling it a day. This is some of the best stuff I've ever heard from an NI band and on this showing Victim should be fecking huge! There are many bands touring the world and selling albums by the bucket load that aren't half as talented as Victim and that's an injustice! Get these guys on at Rebellion, buy the fucking album and get them back to Belfast. Let's get Victim out to a wider audience, more people have to hear this stuff. Coming soon on Punkerama Records (I think).

3D Shark - 'I'm Bionic' (CD EP)
I'm struggling to keep up with all the new releases from Belfast label Time to Be Proud Records! Here we have the third release from indie power-poppers 3D Shark and it's their best to date. 3D Shark are one of those bands who just keep getting better and better. On offer this time are 4 shimmering summer powerpop pearls, laced with humour and catchy choruses. Track listing - 1) When I Was Nine 2) She's Going To A Party 3) My Humpy Uncle 4) Sunshine Stride. Each song has an uplifting, feelgood vibe and even though I'm listening to the EP on a cold, dark, wet February night I can't help thinking of summer. Images of beach parties, bikini clad girls and the Lemon Popsicle movies keep popping up in my head, lol. More Freshies than Half Man Half Biscuit sounding this time around but that ain't no bad thing in my book. Good tunes and good fun - pull up a deckchair, crack open a cold beer and soak up the sunshine. Available from all good record stores in Belfast or online via Time To Be Proud.

VA - 'You've Got Good Taste' (CD EP)
The Time To Be Proud record label's annual Cramps tribute night is now in it's seventh year (hard to believe, I know) and as in previous years they have released a tribute CD featuring the best local garage / psychobilly / rockabilly outfits. First up is garage rock / blues exponents The Groundlings with a scuzzy, hard driving version of the classic 'Human Fly', most enjoyable. Raw, primitive rock'n'roll is served up by Los Bloody Rackets on their manic delivery of 'Some New Kind Of Kick', the dual male / female vocal interaction being a particular treat - tremendous stuff. Thee Dirt Byrds get down and dirty with a cracking rendition of 'God Damned Rock'N'Roll', pure garage topped by Keith Farrso's trademark gravel throated scowl, excellent. The Sabrejets can do no wrong in my eyes (ears?) - here they tone things down a bit on 'You'll Never Change Me' - smokin' hot rockabilly, all twanging guitars and Youngsy's laid back vocals - killer. Last but not least Going Full Retard add a bit of psychobilly madness with their frantic cover of 'Dames, Booze, Chains and Boots' - a belter. Another brilliant release from Belfast label Time To Be Proud Records. As always the CD is limited to just 200 copies and only available (for free) at the gig which takes place at the Black Box, Belfast on 6th February, 2016 (click the link below for details). Sure, you can't beat it!

Thee Dirt Byrds - 'Cuz I Luv U' (CD EP)
Released at the tail end of 2015 on the wonderful Time To Be Proud record label, Thee Dirt Byrds official debut release presents us with 6 slices of good old garage punk / dirty rock'n'roll mayhem. A mix of classic covers and self-penned tunes that combine the chaotic sounds of 60's garage punk, the motor city sounds of early 70's Detroit and punk rock from the seedy underbelly of the New York scene circa 1976. Having just said all that, the band throw up a surprise with the opening track, a cover of the Slade glam stomp favourite 'Cuz I Luv You'. An added psychedelic tinge ensuring that its not just a safe straightforward copy of the original. A good start. Two of the greatest raw rock'n'roll songs ever written - The Sonics 'Psycho' and Clarence Stacy's 'Jack The Ripper' - are also covered on the EP, giving the band a chance to flex their muscles with suitable psychotic versions of both, beefed up admirably by Farr's gravel-throated vocals. Raw garage punk with scowling vocals is served up on 'Rock'n'Roll Whore' and 'Rat', two of the band's own compositions whilst the final track is a a big thumping instrumental evoking a real sense of menace. An excellent debut indeed giving us a wee taste of what to expect on Thee Dirt Byrds soon to be released album, something to look forward to. Available from all good record shops in Belfast or from the Time To Be Proud online store.

The Defects - '45 Minutes' (CD album)
A new Defects album = another fucking classic! Admittedly, on first listen 45 Minutes didn't have the immediate explosive impact of its predecessor Politicophobia but after a few listens one can guarantee that this album is a real grower and simply outstanding. There is a slight change in direction at work on 45 Minutes to a 'rockier' (as opposed to 'punkier') sound with a wee American flavour coming through on certain songs (maybe something to do with the band heading to the USA later this year perhaps?). As the opening track kicked in it was one of those WTF! moments (but in a good way) - Sigue Sigue Sputnik meets the Sex Pistols on the futuristic sounding Cut Of The Action, unexpected but fucking brilliant. That American vibe comes through on songs such as No Authority, Unstoppable, Welcome To Nowhere and Standpoint, reminding this listener of bands such as Pennywise and Bad Religion. There's a touch of Killing Joke about the title track 45 minutes while the Sex Pistols influence pops up again on Resellers (my favourite track on the album) a 70's style punk blaster with a wee Rezillos meets the Pistols feel to it. For some reason Buck reminds me of Eugene Reynolds on this one. The Ruts were a big influence on the Defects so its no surprise that Traffic Island Castaway, a tribute to Malcolm Owen, sounds so much like The Ruts themselves and the follow up track Southall Roots is a dub punk version of the same song. No one does this sort of stuff better. Son Of Corruption is another outstanding tune not least for the amazing guitars, a must hear. The final track All The Way Down treats us to a slab of heavy dub based around the sampled phrase All The Way Down which some Rebellion regulars might recognise! Everything about this album screams quality - from the songwriting to the recording to the delivery, its all there. I've said it before and I'll say it again - there is no better punk band out there than The Defects! The album launch gig is on January 15 at the Empire, Belfast.... the album is released on the Punkerama label.

The Androids - 'Rawk'N'Rawl' (official bootleg CD)
The Androids appearance at the Harp Bar reunion back in 2012 was undoubtedly the highlight of a great night. They were one of my favourite bands back in the late 70's, right up there with Rudi and The Outcasts. I was chuffed to bits when I heard that 3 original members - Joe, Aza and Billy had agreed to get together for the first time in more than 30 years to perform at the reunion. Considering they only got together about a week before the gig they played a blinding set on the night. Memories of crazy nights down the Harp Bar came flooding back as original songs such as Lipstick Heroes, Trademark World, Terminal Breakout and 9 To 5 transported us back in time. Amazingly, the band performed a new song called The Zimmer Man which was reportedly written just a few days before the gig! They also threw in a sterling cover of the Dead Boys - Sonic Reducer, a bona fide punk classic and finished the set with the old crowd favourite The Mince - a meandering punk instrumental. The Androids were one of a kind with their own distinctive sound and when they hit the stage in the Black Box, Hill Street, Belfast, some 34 years after their first gig in Hill Street, it was like they'd never been away. Luckily the gig was recorded and the Androids set has been released as an 'official bootleg' CD and its the biz. If you wanna copy contact the band / Joe Moody via the Androids facebook page

Prins Carl - 'Wake Up' EP (7" EP)
A wee bit late with this one as it came out back in February, but better late than never as they say. Prins Carl are a street punk band from Sweden who have already released two albums. Gruff, raspy vocals backed by a solid mid-tempo Oi! / Street punk sound are the order of the day as the band belt out four heartfelt working class anthems - Power In The Union / Fight Them All / Don't Want To Be Your Friend / A.L.S. This is good stuff - the catchy melodies, pounding beat and gruff vocals reminding me (in part) of bands such as Perkele, Wretched Ones, Street Dogs etc. This is the first time I've heard this band and I'm quite impressed. Now I'll have to go and check out their previous releases. The EP is a limited edition pressed on red vinyl. Might not be any copies left though.....

External Menace / The Droogettes - split EP (7" EP)
I must say Rebel Sound do put out some interesting records - like this split EP which pairs Scotland's External Menace and all girl band The Droogettes from Philadelphia, USA. This is the first official release of new material by External Menace since 1998 and the two tracks on offer here are both excellent examples of melodic punk rock. Originally formed in 1979 External Menace are probably best remembered for their early 80's singles 'Youth Of Today' and 'No Views', two prime slabs of UK82 H/C. The new songs 'Rights Now' and 'Playin God' are slightly less aggressive and more melodic than the early stuff but still pretty powerful. The former reminding me of a more forceful 999 while the later is a more The Fits meets The Adverts affair. Impressive stuff. The Droogettes are a different kettle of fish altogether. Influenced by bands such as the Business, Cock Sparrer, and Blitz these girls add an element of female fun to the male dominated Oi! scene. Dressing in 'Clockwork Orange' gear a la The Adicts, The Droogettes offer up two tough little cookies in the form of 'Girls At The Milk Bar' and 'Antifa Roller Skating'. I like the Droogettes, good fun and less aggressive sounding than some of their male counterparts. Soundwise? The Gympslips and The Adicts are good reference points. Another excellent release from Rebel Sound on the now customary choice of coloured vinyls. The EP is due for release on 12 June but can be pre-ordered now.

The Bad Engrish - 'No Passing Trend' (vinyl LP)
For those of you not yet familiar with this band - The Bad Engrish are a punk / oi! band from Denver, Colorado that formed in 2009. Their sound is a mix of 77 pogo punk and 80's oi! with nods towards the likes of Blanks 77, Oxymoron and Sniper 66. Although the band hail from the USA they sound so much like a UK band. There's a definite Cockney Rejects, Business, Peter & The Testtube Babies, Angelic Upstarts vibe running through the album. The Opening track Oi! is... sounds so much like the Cockney Rejects, whilst the excellent Fish & Chips could have come straight outta the Angelic Upstarts songbook. Fast, furious and fun, fun, fun all the way on songs such as Pogo Power, Bollox Bollox and the standout tracks Harry May and People Change. I'm liking this one a lot. Another sterling release from the Rebel Sound camp. As with all previous releases 'No Passing Trend' is a limited edition vinyl album that comes in a choice of colours. The album was released on 27 May so you'd better hurry if you want to grab a copy.

The Defects - 'Live At The Ulster Hall, March 2014' (DVD)
March 14th 2014, The Defects took to the hallowed stage of the Ulster Hall, Belfast, as support to Stiff Little Fingers at their annual homecoming gig. The venue was packed (as always) with Fingers fans young and old. I was there that night and I was blown away by the power and intensity of the Defects set. I've seen the band many times over the years and they've yet to disappoint. They were on top form that night, soaking up the atmosphere in the prestigious venue and feeding off the large crowd. The sound was crystal clear as the Defects belted out a mix of newer songs and older classics in the relatively short 12 song set. Buttz Yoddles (of Buttz TV), in conjunction with Punkerama Records, was on hand to video the band in all their glory as they ripped through punk anthems such as Revelator / Survival / Dance Until You Drop / Hill Street / Brutality etc. A sizeable portion of the partisan SLF crowd were up front dancing and singing along as the band finished a cracking set with their rousing version of Bob Marley's 'Get Up Stand Up'. The Defects really upped the anti for this gig and I'm sure they probably won quite a few new fans on the night. It was a devastating performance, probably the best I've seen from them and if truth be told, they blew SLF away. The die-hard Fingers fans will probably say I'm talking shit but there is a real lack of energy and vibrancy about SLF these days, not so with the Defects. Anyhow, if you wanna see the best of NI punk in action then grab yourself a copy of this quality DVD. Sound and visuals are excellent. Its a special edition 2 disc set containing the DVD and an audio CD of the gig. Sure, you can't be bad to that.

1000 Drunken Nights - 'Empyres' EP (7" vinyl)
There have been some cracking local releases already this year and this soon to be released EP by 1000 Drunken Nights is no exception. Has it really been 7 years since their last release? Way too long for a band of this calibre. Well, those lovable rogues are back with a bang and angrier than ever. The EP kicks off with 'Empyres', a skanking H/C number that sets its sights firmly on the rich and powerful, who feel the full force of the bands wrath for their abuse of the working class and the poor, using them as cannon fodder in their quests to build / maintain empires. Its an anti-system song built around thought-provoking, challenging lyrics - Your empires cast long shadows, the poor March to your gallows, assembly lines and battle fronts, you grovel for votes in your power hunt - much more effective than the usual 'fuck the system blah blah blah...' style lyrics spouted by many a lesser band. Next up 'Glass Tombstones', a monster of a song. Apparently written by Darzo many years ago in the wake of the ceasefires, he shares his (then) vision for a post-troubles Belfast where the big corporations spearhead the gentrification of the city. He pretty much hits the nail on the head when he sings "The curtain falls on the civil unrest and American investors begin to infest, take a final look at the streets where you're from, none of it will matter when the NIO's done. Identikit city's sprung on the horizon, steel and glass tombstones mesmerising, a populace concerned with material wealth, while the neighbourhood is stolen by the corporate stealth." The simplistic yet highly effective chorus "the NIO has plans for our city" is delivered with such force and venom that it comes across as a challenge. Without even asking the question, you instinctively know that Darzo wants to know what the fuck you're going to do about it! Full on melodic H/C at it's best. First song on the B side 'Our Streets' has more of a streetpunk / oi! feel to it. No one escapes the ire of these boys, and this time their anger is directed at the paramilitaries - "Take back our future, take back our streets, you're defending no one, you're a fuckin disease." A rousing punk rock anthem on which 1000 Drunken Nights prove they are a band not afraid to speak their mind. The final song on the EP is the anti-capitalist rant 'Troublemakers' - "This is our song of condemnation, of fervent supporters of capitalism, false nationality and hollow national pride, and wars waged for greed with no respect for human life." The song is essentially a call to arms with lines such as "troublemakers of the world unite" and "do what you can to set the world alight" letting us know the time for talking is over and its time to make a stand. The ferocity and intensity of 'Troublemakers' is staggering, probably the most ferocious 3 minute burst of punk rock I've ever heard. This EP would certainly go straight into my Top 10 best NI punk releases of the past 35 years or so, yes I rate it that highly! I probably shouldn't even like this band - I've never really been what you would call a H/C fan and I hate politics - but I absolutely fucking adore them. From the first moment I heard 1000 Drunken Nights (which was probably the best part of ten years ago, ulp!) I felt there was something special about them, that opinion hasn't changed. Its time for 1000 Drunken Nights to set the punk rock world alight! A co-release between Black North Records + Visions Of Warning Records, the Ep will be available on 7" vinyl or as digital download from the 18th July, with a special launch gig being held at the Warzone Centre, Belfast on that date. Victim - 'Swan Songs' (CD album)
Victim - formed in Belfast 1977, then relocated to Manchester late 1979 where the nucleus of the band, Joe Moody and Wes Graham have been writing, recording and performing ever since. 2015 and the band have just recorded their first proper album (hard to believe, I know). Whereas their previous album 'Everything' was a collection of singles and unreleased demos, 'Swan Songs' features 11 brand new songs plus two old songs that have only just been recorded for the first time. The result is nothing short of sensational - seriously. Although drawing on influences such as Peter Perrett, Lou Reed, and Ziggy Stardust era David Bowie, Victim always maintained their own distinctive punk sound. They still have their own distinctive sound albeit a little lighter on the punk. This album has everything from the alternative folk of the closing track 'Eternal Darkness' on which Victim sound remarkably like Belfast's Subway Poets, the blistering punk infused tribute to Bob Dylan 'The Zimmer Man', the haunting 'Oblivion' which wouldn't have been out of place on Alice Coopers 'Welcome To My Nightmare' album, the swirling keyboards on the big folky ballad 'Star / Fish', the Only Ones inspired 'Vacant Lot', the hypnotic trance of 'In Your Grave', and the utterly brilliant Irish / Cajun drinking song 'The Gospel Truth'. Acoustic guitars, handclaps, whistles, infectious melodies and impeccable harmonies permeate throughout the album helping to create a joyous, uplifting vibe despite some of the dark subject matter i.e. betrayal / broken hearts ('The Vacant Lot'), suicide ('Back From The Edge'), light v dark ('Oblivion'), good v evil? (G.O.D). Way back in November 1978 Victim were filmed live at the Harp Bar, Belfast performing the song 'Trademark World'. The footage subsequently appeared in the seminal punk documentary film Shellshock Rock. Why the band never recorded the song way back then I don't know because it is a bona fide NI punk classic. Thankfully, at long last, we now have a studio recording and it still sounds fucking great. 'Cheap Thrills' (about prostitution) is the other old song (recorded for the first time) to appear on the album. Pure Johnny Thunders meets Lou Reed on a New York sidewalk full of hookers, brilliant! As well as writing all the songs, Moody and Graham played virtually all the instruments, provided all the vocals and produced the songs themselves, with minimal assistance from a few associates. Unlike myself, Moody is a true wordsmith, his lyrics are poetry in motion. Lyrics will be provided with the album so make sure you check them out. I know this review doesn't really do the album justice, so I'll sum it up in just one word - STUNNING! Oh, nearly forgot, you also get 3 bonus tracks taken from last years cracking 7" single - 'Empty Men', 'The Bus' and 'Another Weird Dream'. This is one album you must hear!
I was lucky enough to get an advance promo copy from the band, but the album is due for release very soon on the Punkerama label. I'll post details on our facebook page when I get them. Or keep checking the Punkerama facebook page for news.....

The Fits -'Offerings At The Altar - Live At Voodoo, Belfast' (CD)
Hot on the heels of the recent Infa Riot live CD released by Punkerama Records comes this wee beauty from 80's punk stalwarts The Fits, recorded live at Voodoo, Belfast on 04/10/2014. Since reforming around 2012 the band have went from strength to strength, once again proving to be a potent force on the UK punk scene. This was the bands first ever visit to Belfast and their set consisted of a cracking mix of old songs such as 'Last Laugh', the excellent 'Straps', 'Different Way' plus of course, 'Tears Of A Nation' one of the greatest songs from the 80's punk era and newer material like 'Son Of a Gun', 'The Visitor' and the reworked 'Chances'. This was a powerful set by a band showcasing their muscular brand of melodic punk rock, a sound more in tone with the likes of early Chelsea and The Ruts, than the 80's studs and leather brigade that the Fits were sometimes lumped in with. Great performance, great sound quality, recorded in the best small venue in Belfast, what's not to like about this album? Although, I wish they'd played 'Odd Bod Mod', the first Fits song I ever heard many moons ago! 'Offerings At The Altar' is available on ltd. edt. CD digipak from Punkerama Records or through the band.

Sense Deficiency - 'Will Think For Braincells' (EP)
This is the debut release from Enniskillen band Sense Deficiency who have been on the go for around two years now. The Fermanagh trio peddle a strange mix of melodic punk, H/C and ska with the H/C element coming to the fore on three of the five tracks on offer. 'Don't Get High On Your Own Supply', 'Negated Utopia' and 'Scaremonger' are all pounding drums, heavy riffs and gruff vocals just as you might expect and all weigh in at just under three minutes. The slightly more uptempo, melodic 'Don't Get High...' being the pick of the bunch for me while the other two for some reason remind me of early Black Sabbath! I'm not much of a H/C fan to be honest so I much prefer the remaining two tracks 'Waiting To Live' and 'Proudhon In Manhattan' with their melodic punk / ska blend, the latter (a cover of a Wingnut Dishwashers Union tune) at times reminding me a little of Rancid. Much more up my street and the sort of stuff I'd like to hear more off. The EP is currently only available as a download via bandcamp but hardcopies will be available in June when the EP is released on CD at a special launch gig at Charlies Bar, Enniskillen, June 19. Sense Deficiency are on the bill for the Keep The Faith Festival in Belfast later this month, so check 'em out if you get the chance.

Infa Riot - 'Live At Voodoo, Belfast' (CD album)
I have to be honest and say that although I was familiar with most of their stuff back in the '80s, Infa Riot were a band that I never really got in to. I don't know what they were like live back in their heyday, but now, 3 decades later, on the evidence of this CD, they are the dogs bollocks! Recorded live at Voodoo on the bands first ever visit to Belfast (Feb 2014) this CD captures a band on fire. This is pure, adrenalin fuelled punk'n'oi - its loud, brash, and sometimes chaotic and its fucking brilliant. Each song, from the opening 'Emergency' to the closing 'In For A Riot' transformed into a fist-pumping sing-a-long streetpunk anthem. Songs such as 'The Winner', '5 Minute Fashion', 'Still Out Of Order' and 'Kids Of The '80s' take on a life of their own, exuding a power and energy that, in my opinion, was never fully captured on their early vinyl recordings. Highlights of the set include 'We Outnumber You', 'Catch 22' and 'Power'. Frontman Lee Wilson has a good rapport with the audience, goading them into joining in and getting his wish when he's joined onstage by well-known Belfast punkettes Anna-Marie and Danielle Punk (on backing vocals) for a suitably rowdy encore of 'In For A Riot'. It sounds like some mighty craic was had by all on the night. Now I wish I'd fucking went to the gig! The album is released as a limited edition CD digi-pak on the local Punkerama label and available to purchase via their online shop. You can probably get it in Dragon Records, Belfast as well.....

Hard Case - 'Oi Oi He Was A Belfast Boy'(a tribute to Colin Riot) (CD EP)
Belfast streetpunks Hard Case deliver a poignant tribute to the late, great Colin Riot. 'Oi Oi He Was A Belfast Boy' is a fast paced, anthemic punk song, built on respect as opposed to slushy sentimentality. The intro features the voice of the big lad himself with the immortal line "This is a working class protest, nothing more, nothing fucking less" and the track also features Colin's partner Nikki on guest vocals, a nice touch. I have a wee soft spot for Hard Case - I love their lyrics, I love their attitude and by fuck, they can play a bit too! This is without question the band at their best and I'm sure Colin will be looking down with a huge smile on his face. A heartfelt punk rock tribute to a Belfast punk legend delivered by Hard Case in their own inimitable way. RIP Colin 'Riot' McQuillan.
The other tracks on the CD are superb quality live recordings of two of the band's most popular songs 'Our Guitars Kill Fascists' and 'God Sent Me An Angel (In Fuck Me Boots)' inclusive of the non-PC inbetween-song banter! The chosen songs fully encompass the band's mantra of 'having a laugh and having a say' and also showcase why they are an important band on the local scene. Hard Case - keeping it real!
All profits from the sale of the CD go to the Colin 'Riot' McQuillan Foundation so get yer pennies out.
Copies can be purchased from the Foundation or from Dragon Records, Belfast or from the band at Hard Case gigs........

Going Full Retard - 'Into The Valley Of The Ultra-Retards' (CD EP)
Hell yes! The debut release from Belfast psychobillies Going Full Retard is here and it's a screamer. This band rock like a one-legged man on Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge on a windy day. Billy Riot and the boys have got this punky rockabilly thing down to a tee! The opening track, the self-penned 'Ordinary Shoes (Rave On)' is a humorous tribute to the rock'n'rollers of the 50's that finishes with a suitably psychotic Buddy Holly medley. Played at a frantic pace, its a killer tune that sets the tone for the rest of the EP. Eddie Cochran's '20 Flight Rock' gets the GFT treatment on track 2. A more than decent cover of a rock'n'roll classic. The band really come into their own on 'Psychobilly Love Song', another original which might just be the best psychobilly song ever written! Seriously, its that good. The studio version rocks like a beast in brothel creepers. But, hey hold on, holy fuck - a psychobilly version of 'Mongoloid' - the Devo classic? Never seen that coming. What a fucking racket, absolutely superb. Stick this one down as possibly the best cover version ever! Just listen to that bass! This is one helluva debut, and a full album is due out later this year. I for one, can't wait! Going Full Retard - great tunes and good craic. For more details visit the band on facebook...

VA - 'Bad Vibrations EP' (CD EP)
The now annual Record Store Day release from Belfast based Time To Be Proud Records and yes, as always, its a wee belter. Four glorious tracks of fucked up, raucous rock'n'roll is whats on offer here. The Dirt Birds have the honour of kicking off proceedings with the wonderful 'All I Wanna Do'. The Dirt Birds were formed by a couple of ex members of Thee Flash Guns who originally performed the song. 'All I Wanna Do' has that classic 70's New York Punk vibe stamped all over it - rabble rousing, sleazy rock'n'roll Heartbreakers style with a chorus to die for. Johnny Thunders would be proud of them. Next up a political psychobilly song courtesy of the brilliant Going Full Retard. 'Bring Down Those Evil Houses' is a tune and a half, a monster hillbilly stomp! Going Full Retard are going places, mark my words. The Groundlings weigh in with the hard drivin' 'Detroit To New Orleans', a suitable slab of 60's inspired garage rock. Move over Detroit, this is Belfast Motor City. Last, but by no means least, Los Bloody Rackets rip it up on 'That's Rock'n'Roll' - a truly manic slice of demented r'n'r, with a singer who sounds like Little Richard off his face on Buckie! This is what rock'n'roll should sound like. Superb! The EP is available from all good Belfast record shops or from Time To Be Proud's online store. A special 'Bad Vibrations' gig featuring all 4 bands who appear on the EP will take place on May 29 at the Bar With No Name, Belfast.

Takers'N'Users - 'Bootboys EP' (CD EP)
The debut release from new Belfast Oi! band Takers'n'Users and its a fucking belter! The CD features 4 crunching singalong bootboy anthems with a sound lying somewhere between Runnin' Riot and Buck Eejit. The opening track 'Bootboys' comes at ya like a size 10 DM to the head. A fast and furious ode to the working class that immediately lets us know where the band are coming from - "I'm just a working class Norn Iron bootboy, nothing more, nothing less" - a cracking start. Up next is the thumping 'Buckfast Blues' a tale of the after effects of over indulging in the favourite tipple of the Belfast punks'n'skins, which I'm sure most of you can relate to! Track 3 'Sometimes, Always' is a top fucking tune which see's the band nail their colours to the mast - "sometimes anti-social, always anti-fascist' and invoking the skinhead spirit of '69. This is one that'll stick in your head and I guarantee you'll be singing the chorus continuously. The closing track is another cracker - Takers'n'Users proving themselves to be bootboys with a social conscience on 'The Neurotics Were Right'. This time the band put the boot into the government and the rich for the damage they've caused - "the neurotics had it right, from day one, kick out the Tories, Eton scum". Class, I like this CD a lot and look forward to hearing more from this band. I'm guessing Takers'n'Users were heavily influenced by Runnin' Riot (wasn't Sprouley the original drummer in Runnin' Riot?) and that's certainly no bad thing. Catch these boys live if you get the chance.
The CD will be launched sometime in June, date and venue tbc... check the band's FB page for details.....

Steven VX - 'Rocket 21 EP' (CD EP)
Most local gig goers will have seen young Steven VX doing his acoustic punk thing at one of his many prestigious support slots / events and therefore will already know that this is one talented kid. But its only when Steven hits the recording studio you begin to realise just how talented this kid really is. His previous release - the excellent 'The Boy Looked At Johnny EP' - gave us a glimpse of what he is capable of and on this new release we get to hear Steven VX in fully charged, punk'n'roll mode. As on the 'Johnny' EP, Steven is responsible for all instruments and vocals, as well as songwriting (except on the last track).
Steven VX comes out all guns blazing on the opening track 'Memo' - screeching electric guitars, fuck you attitude, and a nod of respect to the Sex Pistols and Heartbreakers (especially the former's 'Silly Thing'). Track 2 'Daydreamer' slows the pace a little as Steven shows his versatility with a little punk-in-dub number reminiscent of The Clash and / or The Ruts although in places it makes me think of PIL's debut 45 'Public Image', no bad thing in my book. The next track 'Tommy' is played at breakneck speed, kinda like early Green Day but with more balls (a lot more balls!). Those punk rock'n'roll guitars are all fired up and ready to go go (yeah, there's the merest hint of the Ramones in there too). The final track is a scorching cover of John Lennon's 'Gimme Some Truth'. Most of the old school 77 punks will remember Generation X's brilliant cover of this song and it will come as no surprise then that Steven VX's version owes more to the latter rather than the former. Being an old 77 punkite myself I have to admit Steven VX's cover of this song is every bit as good as Gen X's. And I don't say that lightly! Well impressed with this EP, excellent stuff indeed.
Steven VX wears his 77 punk influences on his sleeve but don't be fooled into thinking this is some kinda retro kick. Far from it - Steven VX blows the cobwebs of those old dusty '77 45's and with a bit of spit'n'polish adds a 21st Century sheen to the punk rock sound. This is the future of NI punk....
The EP can be bought / streamed from Bandcamp. Or buy it from any good record shop in Belfast.

The Dirt Birds - promo CD
For those who mourned the recent breakup of Thee Flash Guns, never fear because The Dirt Birds are here! Ex Thee Flash Guns members Keith Farr and John Meh have roped in drummer Bob Moody from Wasted Talent (although Moody doesn't actually appear on this CD) to create a formidable new garage r'n'r monster. This is just a wee 4 track taster to let us know what The Dirt Birds are all about. The band get straight down to business on the opening track 'Look Me In The Eyes', a truly psychotic slab of raw garage-punk. When Farr states "cause I fucking hate you' you know he fucking means it! Brilliant start. Next up is the haunting instrumental 'The Crash' with its brooding bassline creating a real sense of foreboding. Then we're treated to the heavy garage / r&b crunch of 'She's Not Coming Back', plenty of feedback and fuzzy guitar on this one, like a really wigged out Dr Feelgood. The final track 'Jack The Ripper' has probably been covered by hundreds of bands over the years. The Dirt Birds version is as good as any and probably better than most, punk as fuck! I look forward to hearing more from this band.

VA - 'Songs The Cramps Taught Us' (CD EP)
Time To Be Proud Records must be the most generous label around. I don't know how they can keep pumping out these incredibly good freebie CD's! This one was released to coincide with the annual Cramps Tribute night (now in its 6th year) at the Black Box, Belfast on 07/02/15. Limited to just 200 copies and only available at the gig, the EP boasts a mighty fine lineup of local talent. Kicking things off are Belfast's rockabilly kingpins The Sabrejets with a suitably rockin' version of 'Mad Daddy'. Nobody does this kinda stuff better than The Sabrejets. Garage / blues combo The Groundlings get down and dirty with a raw, crunching cover of 'TV Set' which is followed by some excellent surfin' psychobilly on 'Domino' courtesy of Going Full Retard. Methinks Billy Riot has found his true calling, lol! Bringing up the rear are newbies (of sorts) Los Bloody Rackets, primitive garage r'n'r merchants who deliver a suitably fuzzy version of the classic 'Garbageman'. Tremendous stuff.

The B Sides - 'Smell A Rat' (CD EP)
The B Sides hail from my neck of the woods and until recently their set comprised solely of punk covers, which they do very well it has to be said. However, the band have started to write and perform some original material and recently went into the local Einstein Studios to lay down some tracks with producer Frankie McClay. The result of these sessions is the excellent 4 track 'Smell A Rat' EP. The opening song 'Smell A Rat', a slow burner which puts the boot into corrupt politicians, has a bit of an 80's style punk / metal crossover vibe to it, giving us a wee glimpse of where their influences are coming from. Next up is 'Britain's Broken Childhood' - a thunderous punk rock toon with a pounding beat that rattles along with a real sense of urgency. Here the band let rip about the ongoing BBC paedophile scandal, employing a simple but highly effective chorus, spitting out the names HARRIS, HALL, GLITTER, SAVILLE with real venom! A fucking superb track highlighting what these boys are capable of. Rip-off bankers are the targets for the next song 'Bonus Ball' a punchy wee slice of punk'n'roll which is the one that'll get you bouncing around whilst the final track see's the band move back into a more punk / metal groove on 'Karaoke Factor' - this time the band takes aim at Simon Cowell and his ilk! Its been a long time since we've had a good punk band in this shitty town so hopefully with more songs like 'Britain's Broken Childhood' and 'Bonus Ball' The B Sides can put Antrim back on the punk rock map. Good stuff.

VA - 'Cashing In On Christmas Vol. 6' (vinyl LP)
The latest in the annual series of punky Xmas comps from US label Rebel Sound. The LP was due for release in time for Xmas 2014 but was held up by the sudden death of the guy who was mastering the record. The new realease date is 31/01/2015. Now, if like me, you enjoy a good old punky Xmas song then this album is well worth checking out. Like on the previous releases in this series there are some real gems as well as the occasional stinker. Most of the contributions come from curennt street-punk / bootboy favourites such as the mighty City Saints, DDC, The Traditionals, Gimp Fist, and Brassknuckle Boys (to name just a few) but its those old punk stalwarts The Vibrators who top the lot with the wonderful 'I Hate Xmas', the standout track on the album and one of the best Xmas songs ever! The real surprise package comes in the form of Saints And Sinners (with guest vocals by Liz from Deadline) and their cover of The Pogues / Kirsty MacColl's 'Fairytale Of New York' which is just brilliant! They've rocked it up a bit here, with buzzing guitars and the vocals are a treat, I like this more than the original! All-female Oi! band The Droogettes get an honorable mention for 'Vixen' with it's Shangri-Las meet The Violators vibe. The Hulls - 'Christmas Time On The Picket Line' is another treat with a kind of Redskins / Guitar Gangsters feel to it. Keyside Strike (featuring Wakey from English Dogs) gives us a bit of festive H/C fun with 'Stuff Your Christmas' (which I think is a bonus track on the CD issue only???). Concrete and Pariah deliver the stinkers (in my humble opinion). 19 track double LP in a choice of colour - snow white with yellow piss splatter or coal black. Amazing sleeve artwork by Richard Stone (Splodgenessabounds).

Barney - '20 Years' (CD album)
Barney - where the fuck have you been these past 20 years? The Newtownabbey punks are back with a bang, a big fuckin' bang! I've been waiting a long time for a band like this to explode onto the local scene and Barney have answered the call, big style! Released on January 20th 2015 by Punkerama Records '20 Years' is already earmarked as my 'album of the year' - I can't see anybody topping this album (unless of course Barney release a 2nd album). 13 tracks just bursting with attitude and energy,(and a sense of humour when required) each one a bona fide punk anthem in the making. From the opening 'Don't Trust The Authorities' to the closing 'Checkin' Out' Barney deliver a set of pulsating, high octane, sing-a-long killer punk tunes such as Not The Same, Jackie, Win Some Lose Some and the band's calling card We're Not Worthy ("we're not worthy, we're not smart / we know punk rock from the heart / we're not special, we're not WOW, we're just here to show you how"). They certainly do show us how! I could throw out a few names as reference points - Toy Dolls, The Queers, Green Day, Cock Sparrer, NoFX, The Mansfields, Shanghai Wires, Screeching Weasel etc - but that doesn't really do justice as Barney blows them all away. Someone (cheers Vinny) recently summed Barney up as 'reminiscent of early Oi! but with a load more bollocks thrown in!' - hard to argue with that. Barney have seamlessly blended the best elements of pop-punk and early Oi! to create their own sound - popoi! punk perhaps? This band are set to take the punk world by storm. Buy the album now from Punkerama Records or at any of the bands gigs. You won't be disappointed.

XSLF - 'Inflammable Material' (CD EP)
Brilliant debut Ep from the band formed by ex Stiff Little Fingers members Henry Cluney and Jim Reilly, ably assisted by Ave Tsarion on bass. Henry and Jim are two of the most popular, colourful characters on the local scene so as expected news of this release generated quite a bit of excitement. Now, it has been noted that some detractors among the multitude of SLF fans had dismissed XSLF as nothing more than another SLF cover band. Well, fuck them! In my opinion Henry and Jim have as much right to perform SLF songs as Jake and co. but we'll not get into that now. Anyhow, the inclusion of 2 new songs instantly proves the detractors wrong, XSLF are a bona fide band in their own right. First up is the highly infectious punky reggae groove of 'Inflammable Material' with Clash-like guitars, horns, and some rub-a-dub-dub. Get your dancing shoes on for this killer track. Next up 'Torrens Avenue' - a solid rocker about life on a Belfast interface, this song showcases just what a tight and powerful unit XSLF has become. The final track is a reworked version of the old SLF anthem 'Alternative Ulster' and it's the dogs bollocks! I've heard countless versions of this song over the years but this one will knock yer socks off! Its loud, fast and aggressive. It's performed at breakneck speed and the excellent backing vocals during the chorus lift the song up to another level as Henry spits venom about how life was more than 30 years ago. It all slows down near the end when we get to hear the new added lyrics as Henry tells us how things have changed (no more Pound, no more Trident, no walk back to the city), life might be a bit better now but we still need an Alternative Ulster! Fucking superb! This is a limited edition (not sure how many copies) so get one while you can from the likes of Dragon Records in Belfast or order online from the bands website.... http://xslf.moonfruit.com/

10 Foot Clown - 'Cubic Feet' (CD album)
Debut album from Belfast band 10 Foot Clown who feature in their ranks ex members of Asylum, Answer From Limbo, Strangesquid and Amadan amongst others. More alt rock / indie than punk rock, in a similar vein to bands such as The National, Artic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets. Still, not an easy band to pigeonhole as they like to mix things up a bit. There is a definite punky vibe running through the album, check out the Stranglers style bassline on 'Rosa's Dream' (Master Of Regret), an interesting track that has a wee reggae thing going on or the poppy punk of 'I Stand Corrected', an infectious tune that'll get the toes tapping. My favourite track is the rollicking 'I Think I Need To Lie Down' with its slightly off kilter 77 punk feel, a great track indeed. The Monochrome Set spring to mind when listening to the quirky 'Salute', no bad thing in my book and the bouncy 'She Said' is well worth checking out too. 'Cubic Feet' was released in June 2014 (but I've only recently obtained a copy) and it can be purchased from Amazon and I'm sure it will be available in most good local record shops. This is a band worth keeping an eye on.

VA - 'An Xmas Gift To you' (CD album)
Those ever generous folk at Time To Be Proud Records come up trumps once again with this brilliant compilation CD. Released just before Christmas and given away free at the TTBP Xmas bash in the Black Box, Belfast, the CD features 17 of the best bands currently active on the local scene (apart from the Shangrilads who are London based but include ex members of NI band Doomed Youth). "An Xmas Gift To You" highlights the wealth and diversity of talent we are fortunate to have here at home in N. Ireland. Bands appearing on the CD are - Shock Treatment 21, Hard Case, Subway Poets, No Matter, 3D Shark, The Sabrejets, Eighty Four, Protex, The Groundlings, Going Full Retard, The Dollybyrds, St Vitus Dance, Mohican Jack, Stop Stop Start Again, Thee Flash Guns, The Shangrilads, and The Defects. There is honestly not a duff track on the whole album. An array of styles / genres are represented - punk, street-punk, pop-punk, glam-punk, hardcore, garage, psychobilly, rockabilly, indie and even folk, so there should be something for everyone here. Every track is a winner, I love them all so I'm not gonna pick out favourites, but I'll give The Shangrilads a special wee mention simply because they are the only band on the CD I hadn't heard before and their track 'Head On' blew me away on first listen. Great stuff. The bad news is I don't think "An Xmas Gift To You" is on general sale. But it should be! This is a great way for people to check out bands from NI who they might not have heard before (and hear what they've been missing out on). William Maxwell (TTBP Records) deserves a great deal of credit for his constant promotion of local music, mostly at his own expense with little or no return! Stiff Little Fingers - 'No Going Back' (CD album)
A successful pledge campaign in 2014 saw the first new release from SLF in over 10 years. A few months later the album went on general release and has been garnering very favourable reviews ever since. I can see why. Quite a few respected music mags and websites chose 'No Going Back' as their 'album of the year' and although it didn't win that particular accolade here at NI Punk, it is still a damn fine album. Even though it is more rock than punk 'No Going Back' still packs a punch, lyrically as well as musically, the return of Ali McMordie adding a vital spark to a band that had become slightly jaded and (in my opinion) seemed to be just going through the motions these past few years. The anger and passion resonate throughout the songs as Jake takes a pop at politicians (Liars Club), bankers (Full Steam Backwards) and the greedy self obsessed (I Just Care About Me) for example. But by far the best track on the album (somewhat surprising considering the subject matter) is 'My Dark Places'. This is the most personal track on the album as Jake opens up about his own battle against depression and defiantly states 'I'm not going back, to my dark places' and you know he means it. 'My Dark Places' is a very inspiring, even uplifting, song and a crackin' wee tune to boot! There are some nice reggae touches on the album plus the excellent 'Guilty As Sin' with its traditional Irish drinking song feel. As I said earlier, maybe not my 'album of the year' 2014 but still a damn fine album and one I'd certainly recommend. http://slf.com/
