VA - Scarred For Life CD
Wow Yeah! Here it is - the eagerly awaited debut release from Belfast's newest label Scarred For Life Records - and what a fucking debut it is too! I've always been partial to a good comp and lemme tell ya, this is brimming with quality punk rock (in all its shapes and forms - from 77 style to UK 82 to Oi! and Hardcore). SFL have gathered together 18 of the best current bands from the UK and Ireland (plus French noise merchants Paranoid) who let the listener hear just how strong today's scene is. There's just so much good stuff on here that its hard to know where to start. I'm familiar with most of the bands on this 2 X CD especially the N.I. punk contingent (ably represented by The Defects, Control Zone, Thee Radicals, Buck Eeejit, Fubar and new-kids-on-the block VX). But the good thing about comps like this is that they always throw up one or two bands that you're not familiar with and its a real buzz when one of those bands makes you sit up and go 'wow, who the fuck was that'! In this instance, for me anyway, that band was The Lee Harveys - 77 punk influence (with a wee early NI punk vibe about them too) - brilliant, I'll definitely be checking them out! Outwith the NI bands my current favourite band is the Noise Agents who, I'm pleased to say, deliver 2 sing-a-long punk anthems in fine style. Another current favourite is Hooligan (Dublin) who also deliver the goods on 2 tracks of solid melodic punk / rock. The mighty 4 Past Midnight from bonnie Scotland are there too - didn't know they were appearing on the comp, so that was a pleasant surprise - yeah 'Fuck Them All' lads! The Defects steal the show once again with their contribution 'Depraved' - this band can do no wrong in my eyes. Well impressed with those young upstarts VX - mixing it with the big boys and standing their ground, one to watch (thankfully they've binned the screamo, sorry $$, lol). I'm not gonna ramble on, it'd be too easy to start gushing on about how great Thee Radicals 'You Failed Us' is or equally Control Zone's '23 Times' or Buck Eejits 'Best Punk Band' or how Fubar are the best punk covers band around - you'd only accuse me of being biased towards the N.I. bands (but fuck they are Good, lol). Honourable mentions for those old hands Blitzkrieg plus the Dogtown Rebels, and Bang. Oh fuck it, just go and check it out for yerselves, there's something for everyone on the double CD. 36 tracks of pure punk rock. Buy, buy, buy........
