Dead Handsomes /Starjets / Tango Brigade ?
- live @ Kelly's Cellars, Belfast, 28/07/13
Before & after, the XSLF gig we had dashed around the corner to another city centre venue, to hopefully catch the rumoured long awaited for one night only 'Starjets' reformation.
In the end it turned out to be nothing more than a porky pie being circulated around the internet. This was the 'Starjets ' scam gig that never was, in its defence most of the band members were there on stage, but they were playing a bog standard 'Dead Handsomes' covers set list. And not a 'Jets' tune to be heard, abviously as they never rehearsed any.
It's been confirmed that the reformation story didn't come from the former pop punk band members, but from someone trying to cash in on the fact that 'Jimmy Reilly' was playing his debut show with XSLF & not taking up his usual drum seat here, which was being filled by 'Liam L'Strange' on this occasion.
It was never going to be an original 'Starjets' line up get together anyway, why? because Terry, Liam & Sean were here in the flesh, but Paul Bowen was missing and being replaced by Pat Gribben. So does that not technically make it Tango Brigade?.
Their set containing Beatle tunes & (f*****g) 'Woodstock' did nothing for me, though I did enjoy their rendition of 'Rebel Yell' and Pretty Vacant' was reasonable at best. I told Terry after the gig that I remembered buying 'Pretty Vacant from him as a very young kid on the day of release, when he worked behind the counter in gone but not forgotten Harrison's Records. He said that made him feel ancient, but put a wide smile on his face. Then it was time for my big question "Are you going to reform the Starjets' in the near future' and he answered with a defiant "NO", so I guess that's that. But how many times before have you heard bands reply in the negative and then do the opposite, so never say never.
