The Defects Movie (DVD - Buttz TV, 2013)
featuring The Defects live @ the Ritz, Manchester, 30/11/2013
I'm sure most of you are aware by now how highly I rate The Defects, so I was well chuffed when this wee pre-Xmas treat arrived via my letterbox, and needless to say it went into my DVD player at the first opportunity.
On 30/11/2013 Belfast's finest were playing support to Sham 69 at The Ritz, Manchester and Buttz TV (in conjunction with Punkerama Records) were there to record them. The Defects supported Sham 69 at a cracking gig in Belfast last year (and I have to say The Defects stole the show that night) so it was safe to say that the Manchester crowd were in for a treat.
Most live DVD's that I've watched are of a fairly standard format i.e. we get a few pre-gig behind-the-scenes / backstage shots then the bands performance in full. Well Buttz TV dispense with that: yes we get the pre-gig behind-the-scenes / backstage shots to begin with then the band hit the stage, perform the opening number 'Dance til You Drop' and then we get more backstage antics, then its back to the band onstage and so it goes! Its a format that shouldn't really work but somehow it does! Backstage the band are relaxed, in good form, having a bit of craic (and a few beers of course) and there's a semblance of an interview with Buck taking place. And if you've ever wondered how Buck spikes his hair, then watch this DVD!
Onstage The Defects do what the Defects do best - pulverise the audience with a powerful, in-yer-face set of classic punk rock. This time, a short 10 song set split 50/50 between songs from the Defective Breakdown and (the recent) Politicophobia albums (see set list below). Buck, Glenn, Roy and Aidy always give a 100% onstage and it was no different at the Ritz. I was talking to Buck at the Glen Matlock gig in Belfast the previous night and he was suffering badly fom the flu / chest infection but he still managed to put in a sterling performance in Manchester. Nice to see a few old NI punks in the packed audience especially Mo Lawrence who was spotted stage front. Buttz TV did a great job filming the Fex at work and play, the sound quality and visuals are excellent, and there are some interesting camera angles! Nice work Buttz! If you wanna see Belfast's finest in action then buy this DVD, its a lot of fun and packed with killer tunes. Go on, treat yerself for Christmas, you deserve it!
