Time To Be Proud: EP3 (CD)
This is the 3rd in a series of 12 limited edition 4 track CD Ep's featuring a wide variety of Northern Irish bands and artists performing unique cover versions of songs from the glory days of Harp Bar era N.I. punk.
1) Stop! Stop! Start Again - Recall To Life
Belfast's finest purveyors of post-punk / glam drag the old Stage B classic kickin' and howlin' into the 21st century. Always loved the Stage B original and I'm pleased to say that SSSA (one of the best bands around today) dust it down and vamp it up admirably.
2) $hame Academy - Time To Be Proud
The now defunct Belfast punk 'supergroup' breath new life into the old Rudi anthem. Quite fitting that Rudi's Brian Young sings and plays guitar on this classic whilst Greg Cowan (Outcasts) and Petesy Burns (Stalag 17) add a little twist to the proceedings. NI punk at its best. It was this song that inspired this series of EP's and provided the name of the record label.
3) Terri Hooley Experience - The Cops Are Coming
Dear oh dear, Terri fairly butchers the Outcasts pogo-tastic 'Cops.' Oul Terri doesn't really sing though, just sorta talks / shouts over the guitar (I hope Youngsy had nothing to do with this? lol). No drums or bass, just Tel and the guitarist. I'd love to say that this is one of those 'so bad, it's good' moments, but I'd be lying - but it is funny as fuck and does have a certain naive charm.
4) The Desert Hearts - Jimmy Jimmy
Not too familiar with Desert Hearts but this is a decent cover of the old Undertones hit. This version stays pretty faithful to the original , and yeah, I like it. I'd forgot how good this song is.
So there you go, another wee treat from the Time To Be Proud label. I'm loving it - bring on no. 4! A lot of time and effort went into this project, so I hope you are all showing William Maxwell how grateful you are by purchasing this brilliant series.
All 3 CD's available from usual outlets in Belfast. All Time To Be Proud releases available online via Ebay
