BBA Xmas Party feat: Wasted Talent, No Matter, VX, Keith Farr @ the Rabbit Rooms, Bangor, 29/12/12
'The Rabbit Rooms' in Bangor is a hard venue to miss, its not often you play a gig in a sea-front bar with a huge white cartoon rabbit painted on its exterior. Before arriving I was expecting it to be some little full of character salty run down establishment, but in reality it was a very nice and pretty swanky venue, definitely not the kind of place I would have expected to be hosting punk gigs. By the time we'd dodged all the speed camera's between Belfast and Bangor we were late, and 'Keith Farr' was already well into his set when we entered the room. He was real laugh, his tales of underage drinking and sniffing glue in local beauty spots many years before were so funny. He was like a one man acoustic 'Buck Eejit' and had everyone in fits, I can't wait to check him out live again very soon
This gig was another of those last minute offers which 'VX' have recieved recently, and while the band really appreciates being approached by everyone including TomTom & BBA, the time constraints are a killer and had everyone concerned running in circles trying to get everything into shape for this charity show. Luckily 'VX' have gigged so extensively lately that no performance preparation was actually needed, or so the rest of the band thought until the bass player with no regard threw an unexpected massive spanner in the works just prior to the show. Needless to say things weren't exactly alright on the night, but the band just reverted back to their much more powerful original three man line up and played the gig, which ended up through no fault of theirs being much less perfect than VX's usual high standard.
Annoyingly persistant sound and equipment problems just made things go from bad to worse, and after four months of highs this was turning into a bit of a low point. The band never managed to shake the major techno gremlins that dogged their whole set from start to finish , no matter how nuch they tried to change the mix nothing was going right and the performance suffered because of these sonic circumstances, which were beyond the band's and seemingly the engineers control. 'VX' were really disappointed by the end, as they knew themselves how unsatifactory things had gone, even though other bands and punters were telling us it sounded good from the seated area. VX were glad to vacate the stage and just take it on the chin as one of those nights, there was no point whinging about it.
Thats just the way it goes sometimes.
'VX' had to leave immediately after their set because of pre arranged festive plans and we sadly missed both sets by 'No Matter' and Wasted Talent', which we heard later were really good. Hopefully 'VX' will get another chance to share a stage again with both bands sometime soon, and we got chatting to David and Paul from 'Wasted Talent' who are both nice guys, it was a pleasure to meet you.
Happily 'VX' now a trio lived up to their rising reputation at the bands next gig which was at the 'Warzone Centre' in Belfast on the 4.1.13, in the company of The Sabrejets, $hame Academy,TB Chapman and Terri Hooley , by playing possibly the best gig they have ever performed. They recieved a number of unexpected compliments from some of the biggest names from the original N.I punk scene, but more of that later.
All is full on and peachy in the VX camp once again.
