Cut-Throat - 3 track demo CD
(1) Divided Loyalties, (2) Mr 9 - 5, (3) Two Wrongs
Belfast band Cut-Throat recorded this demo way back in 1997 at Giros, in one take, for the princely sum of £25! So why am I reviewing it now? Well, the demo has recently been transferred to CD for the first time and as founding member Steve Smyth has reformed the band, the 3 songs provided here serve as a timely reminder of what Cut-Throat had / have to offer.
Cut-Throat cite Husker Du and GBH amongst their influences and this can be heard on the 3 songs in question. Solid melodic punk ( a la Husker Du, Down By Law etc.) with just a hint of 80s style UK punk (in the vein of GBH, Subhumans et al). The constant rehearsing really paid off as Cut-Throat, as evidenced here, were a solid tight-knit unit with a strong vocal delivery. All 3 songs are top notch punk with the standout being Two Wrongs which has been buzzing round my head since first listen. A real powerhouse of a song with a great catchy chorus - you're guaranteed to be singing it for days after hearing it! This is just a little taster of what might have been - hopefully the reformed Cut-Throat can deliver more of the same. I look forward to finding out.
Hopefully Steve will make copies of the CD available to the masses.......
And, by the way - despite the cheap recording costs - the sound & production on the CD are excellent!
