Punk Rockers by Alain Dister (book) 2006
There was a particular scene during the recent Belfast premiere screening of the Adam Ant film 'The Blue Black Hussar' we attended, that really caught my eye. It involved AA returning from a shopping trip around the antique & flea markets of Paris, they had returned to his apartment and were seen going through his many purchases.Among them was a number of rare rockabilly 45's, and a book I hadn't seen before called 'Punk Rockers!' which was a collection of images by a french photographer named 'Alain Dister'. AA then proceeded to flick through the pages, holding up various classic punk images from the printed pages into the film camera lens. One of the pictures featured, which really appealed to my very strong fashion punk sensibilities was of Vivienne Westwood & Malcolm McLaren, and it was apparently taken in London sometime during 1973. I remembered thinking what great hair she had, no surprise there! as she looked stunning back then, and in the subsequent punk years. Anyway when I got home late that night I knew I had to trace a copy of this book for my own archive, and it turned out to be quite a job. But I achieved my objective, and I eventually bought a very hard to find but reasonably priced excellent condition hardback edition from a dealer in of all places 'Paris'.Some of my Gallic friends are possibly a lot more familiar with this 2006 published book than I was, as there's not a lot of text but what there is published is all written in the authors native tongue.
The photos included here (many previously unseen) of the likes of the 'New York Dolls, The Clash, The Ramones, The Cramps, MC5 and other original era punk faves are fantastic, plus there's a large fan selection of various French, Japanese, Russian, English punks taken in numerous locations across the globe during the 70's, 80's, 90's & noughties. Definitely well worth checking out, if you can find a copy.
