Second Angel - 'Feeling Alive' EP
(released 04/06/12)
'Second Angel' main man Greg McMullan has been around the local music scene for sometime, and apart from solo acoustic gigs in the likes of the well known Lavery's bar in downtown Belfast and beyond , he spends most of his time sharpening his skills as a singer/ songwriter.
Well that's all about to change because Greg has done a 'Dylan' by plugging in and going electric, and the just released 'Feeling Alive ep' is the first result of his change in direction. To be honest this particular genre wouldn't normally be my weapon of choice but I have to say this is rather good, and was part of my soundtrack to the freak heatwave we were all experiencing and enjoying up until a week ago.
The overall good vibe of the EP reminds me of mid 80s shoe gazing indie before acid & ecstacy added the funky dance beats and everything went baggy, a time when the jangly debut efforts by the likes of the Stone Roses, Primal Scream and in particular REM wafted along on the airwaves of every college radio station.
The songs themselves 'Summers Day', 'Hold on' and 'You're Gone' are well crafted and very catchy tunes, and they deserve to be heard by as many people as possible.
Greg McMullan is currently running auditions for his new electric band, while also writing and recording new material to be released later this year.
Expect 'Second Angel' to be out there playing live at a venue near you very soon, until then make a point of checking out the 'Feeling Alive Ep'.
