Stiltwalkers - Lets Play Jesus CD
Lets Play Jesus is the most recent offering from this Belfast based electronic Goth / Darkwave duo. Both Des Potter (vocals) and Mike Scott (synths) have long been associated with the local 'Alternative' music scene - Potter best remembered as guitarist, songwriter and a founding member of seminal Belfast goth-punk band Stage B back in 1978. Mike Scott cut his teeth in another goth influenced punk band Deja Vu who formed in late 1978 after seeing Stage B! Later the two would team up in The Rose Garden before forming the Stiltwalkers in 2004.
This is a dark, brooding, somewhat mystical beast of an album which opens with the haunting sound of chanting monks on Fascination Street which has a kind of Middle Eastern feel. Potter's deep, menacing vocals backed by Scott's masterly soundscapes conjure up images of places you really don't want to go, on songs such as Citizen Kane, Heart And Soul, The Pill Of Immortality, Lets Play Jesus, Death Row Valley, and Ice Baby. Obvious comparisions can be made with Sisters Of Mercy, The Mission, Fields Of The Nephilim etc but listen closely and you might just catch a glimpse of Joy Division and Killing Joke lurking in the dark. Potter's vocal does at times sound eerily like a cross between Ian Curtis and Nick Cave, none more so than on the epic Death Row Valley, which could have been written for Cave himself! Some fantastic songs on this album but the standout for me has to be Fear Of The Lord which is a tortured reworking of the old Peggy Lee classic 'Fever.' Brilliant!
For full effect- put your headphones on and turn the lights off (if you dare)! hahahahaha
