Survival - The Story Of The Defects
by Tina Calder (Ravage Publishing 2011)
_
"Belfast punk band The Defects shot to fame in the early 80s with their unique style of punk music. Their energy, vibrancy and determination seen them sign with one of the biggest record labels of their time and go on to tour with bands such as The Anti-Nowhere League. This book is the story of their rise to fame, the pressures and struggles of the music business and what it was like to be a punk growing up in the midst of the Northern Ireland Troubles. After over 25 years away from the public eye The Defects are back and once again setting the pace for the punk scene of today. Read their story inside...."
This 80 page A4 production, full of photographs - many gleaned from the band's own personal collections, tells the story of the East Belfast punk band The Defects in their own words. From their grass roots - under-age drinking in the field behind the local chippie to the bright lights and fame of London - decrepit squats and penniless living, through to the premature demise and ultimate reformation. Tina Calder relates their tale in a series of vignettes detailing key moments in their career, with vox-pops from all the original band members, each interspersed with 'Defects Galleries'. Limited to a print run of only 200 (the initial 100 signed by the current line-up and the author herself) the book is dedicated to the memory of the band's very own Champion - journo Carol Clerk - highlighting her importance in the story. Rounding off with a full gig history and discography, this book gives an entertaining, albeit brief, insight into the life and times of The Defects.
