XSLF + $teven VX live @ Voodoo, Belfast, 28/07/13
I bet y'all didn't see this one coming, Jim Reilly & Henry Cluney performing under the SLF moniker once again , albeit with an X at the begining. Personally I didn't think it would happen either after so many years, but I'm glad I'm down here tonight in the Voodoo Belfast to see it.
Steven VX currently on a hiatus from his alternative/ punk band 'VX' opened the show, and the kid certainly has his punkabilly akoustik solo thing sorted now, because tonight was easily his best solo unplugged performance to date. His set which featured tunes from the New York Dolls, ExPs, The Clash, Sabrejets & VX etc went down a treat with the crowd, and the surprise intro / outro of Johnny Thunders ' Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory' was an inspired tribute moment. Johnny would've been proud of him, I know I am.
Anticipation was high, as the punters waited for XSLF to take to the stage. And from the first chord of ' Roots,Radicals,Rockers & Reggae' the boys didn't disappoint. The trio also featuring 'Petesy Burns' from The Outcasts on bass, sounded really tight and totally in sync with each other. I've seen Henry play live a number of times recently, but tonight he was like a new man, rejuvenated with his old punk buddies on stage by his side. All the tunes performed tonight were drawn from Jimmy's time in SLF, so it was back to back Inflammable Material & Nobody's Hero's era classics. I doubt there was any complaints regarding this set list, At The Edge, Tin Soldiers, Breakout, Johnny Was, Alternative Ulster, Wasted Life, Suspect Device and of course the mighty 'wham bam thank you mam' glam rock stomp of 'Running Bear. Jimmy's drums were thundering 'Sweet' style during this number.
It was great craic, I mean how could you fault a gig that included a punked up rendition of 'White Christmas, in the middle of our hottest summer ever recorded. Needless to say there was a mass, inappropriate, festive singalong at this point, lol. The boy's have two more irish dates in Derry & Dublin, before they head across the water to commence an extensive mainland tour. It's good to have them back, catch them while you can.
